Do internships prior to your Junior year grind even matter?

I go to a non-target, an insane non-target in every way possible, but there are still tons of students who get FO internships at BB banks here. I notice all their resumes don't have really any experience prior to their Junior year except maybe that one PWM internship or the local PE firm doing some basic secretary work. But what they all have in common were fraternity/sorority positions (this a million times), athletics, and of course a great GPA (3.5+).

I was always under the impression grinding for internships starting your Freshman year is the best way to separate yourself. Sure, you're not doing anything meaningful (with a few exceptions) and everyone with half a brain knows that but I'd imagine it shows interest in what you want to do and helps in that sense.

What do you all think? Definitely looking to hear input from people in roles that are responsible for hiring people.

I hope they dont matter too much lol. Granted im not going into IB, but still. Just started junior year, so we'll see where i end up. If anyone wants a repe intern PM me, non-target, 3.5 gpa, my passions include real estate and finance.

EDIT: did i get hit with MS cause i want to be in RE or because it wasn't funny?

LMAO, I'm just playing along, MS on WSO is not something to worry about. On serious note, I was supposed to do an internship this past summer but it got cancelled, i don't have to explain why. So now looking for something this upcoming summer or maybe something during the school year just to get something more relevant on my resume. I also to go a non-target, but good amount of alum in RE, so hoping for the best.

Lol, I'm not even overexaggerating. My school is ranked in the 200-300s, but I counted 5 (I guess it's not alot but considering how competitive banks are it is) people this year who went into FO BB roles, 3-4 others are doing other FO type of roles at smaller banks.  These people are all rockstars though, I guess if you're the creme of the crop it doesn't matter where you went to school.
