Do PE firms hire International Students?
Being one myself, i'm a bit curious. Say I was to do two years at a top BB (think Leh/ML)and then go on to a top 5 MBA school. Would PE firms find me valuable enough to invest in (sponsoring Visas and all that)or are investment banks the only ones who actively recruit international students??
Regards
Well if you are at a BB for two years, by that time you will have your H1B. Switching jobs shouldn't be a problem is this case because you can work with your old H1 as they apply for a new one.
So how long would the initial H1B be valid for?
International Students in PE (Originally Posted: 02/01/2011)
Hi guys,
I am an international student joining a BB this year and even though it's early I am trying to figure out what my exit opps could be here in the US.
Have any of you worked with people who have work visas in PE? I imagine that the megafunds sponsor them, but what about middle market firms?
Also, have you guys seen people go from US BB to PE in their home country?
Thanks for your help!
I've seen both happen quite a few times.
If you don't mind me asking, which school you from hugob?
i'm in the same situation and would like to know if PEs here help with visa issues... thanks :)
Interested in this too... Anyone has concrete examples?
also know international students who work in PE, but not Megafunds. I think it always depends. It might not be as easy, but still possible.
From my experience it is SUPER tough to go in the buy-side and get a Visa.
If you don't believe me just check the MM PE teams and you ll find out that a LOT of them are American citizen.
It is harder than working in IB but not impossible...
I'm an intl student who went from a US consulting firm to a MM PE shop. Had no issues Visa wise...its a pretty straightforward transfer.
Mostly administrative issues with little to no risk if you already have H1B Visa status. You just have to be very clear about this to potential employers. They of course need to be willing to incur the legal fees associated with it. And if a firm bickers over that...well theyre probably not worth joining in the first place.

I thought BBs that took TARP funds cant hire foreigners?? There was a piece on this on CNN (Whartonite got her GS offer rescinded)
they could after they paid back TARP.
