Do traders look down on risk managers?
I heard that traders look down on risk managers. And because of the nature of their jobs, they always conflict with each other. What’s the reality of the work environment for traders and risk managers like? I want to work as a risk manager in the future
Risk managers are their to tell traders when they've exceeded positions limits and Var. Essentially when the risk to the firm from one trader is too much for that trader to manage, Risk comes in and taps you on the shoulder. Its their job. Traders don't look down on risk managers unless there is personal conflict, traders maximize returns for given risk, and Risk managers minimize risk for returns. They should be complementary to each other.
