At every job I've worked at people like to say that they don't (of course) and 5 minutes later they are talking crap about someone to me.
But it still exists everywhere! So, are you part of this problem? Or are you on the other end of it.

As much as I WISH it didn't exist it does. I don't really care tbh but younger people, especially analysts who are competing with each other tend to do this. As I get older I'm like really........... don't we have more important things to focus on. Apparently not for some people!

Yeah it's always the analysts who are the #1 perpetrators of this given they're in a new city usually and all they have socially is their analyst class sometimes. Also these are fresh out of college kids who are coming off of greek life/student orgs which consist almost solely of gossip. Definitely dwindles as you get older.

Gossiping to me is saying "Hey, did you hear that this person did this?"
Bitching is "This company is fucking stupid and is run by morons"
The key to avoiding gossip is to just talk shit in front of the person's face.

2nd year analysts in IBD definitely have a reputation for gossip... usually about associates, VPs and first year analysts

Most likely, everyone can say they have done it before but no one is proud. Even those who do it find a way to justify it because they know they largely negative stigma attached to it. Although it does deserve that stigma if its something that you regularly do
I'll complain, not gossip, about people both to their face and to others, for example "I can't fucking stand Eric and if he tells me about the girl he hooked up with a month ago in nantucket one more time I might paralyze him" but never like creating rumors or shit talking people for stuff they don't deserve. I think my line is drawn at complaining, if that makes sense. My office is pretty small though and we tend to get along pretty well, even though it definitely has some characters. I would never really shit talk someone behind their back.

I guess I'm not a person who really gets mad at people tho. I just prefer to work through any issues. Like the "Eric" example is just like standard office shit talk that I fuckin roast him (not actually named Eric btw) for all the time too. Like I just won't ever wanna diss someone behind their back, and I like pretty much everyone I meet so it's pretty hard to actually drive me to that point.
Crazy grown men and women even get up in the morning and think about talking about this. This leads me back to the previously mentioned "analyst theory". When kids are at the age that they want a ton of responsibility and haven't been in the work force too long. it usually results in shit talking, and as they have more things to do it declines
I think it depends on the person and if they are satisfied with their job
Definitely has a lot more to do with maturity than anything else but a lot of people at that age are not mature so it comes with the territory

Always hear it among younger ppl in the firm and surprisingly sometimes from hire ups if they disagree and don't want to be upfront about it. Not my cup of tea for obvious reasons. The people who say things are also the first to be talked about and then later associated with drama

It is my view (and also confirmed by many successful older professionals I know thanks to my parents' connections) that chronic gossipers don't advance to important positions.
You can't gain anyone's respect being a gossiper. But being able to lead others, taking initiatives, to forge real connections go a long way in any industry including finance.
