Thank you e-mail for phone interview?

Had a phone interview today. At the end, the interviewer said the usual "feel free to follow up with me or the HR guy."

My question is, is it a good idea to send him a thank-you email?
The reason I ask is because:
a) it was a phone interview
b) he did not give me his e-mail address but I found it on the company website

thoughts?

Do you really think so? They are conducting phone interviews throughout the week, with more to go after me.

I just don't want to come across as rude if I don't send one, and at the same time, I don't want to seem silly if I he doesn't expect me to send him one but I do.

Do you think he expects a thank you e-mail?

Would anyone really think you're silly for saying thank you? It can only help.

I usually send thank you emails to interviewers after the interview, even telephone interviews. In most cases, I found that if the interviewer replies back to the thank you email, its a good sign. No return email usually means they probably won't be progressing you further. Again, this doesn't always happen but in most cases.. well, atleast with me!

So it is true that a decision will probably already have been made by the time you send out a thank you e-mail. However, it's always good and courteous to do so, especially if you only had an interview with one person (as opposed to a Super Day where you could have 12 interviews...that gets tough to do Thank You letters). It can only help, especially if you do move on to the second round.

i think you guys are thinking too much into this. i have received replies to my thank you emails, only to get rejected days later. wen u finish your interview, they write a report. then your decision is sealed

thank you email = being polite, but not going to make or break

From the interviewee's perspective:

I usually sent out thank you letters after every single interview I do. If they didn't give me their email address/name card I will try my best to find out. Thank you letters shouldn't be long, it should just say: 1) thank you 2) saying that the discussion on xxx was very interesting 3) you look forward to this opportunity

From the interviewer's perspective:

Thank you letter is not the decisive factor in the process, however it will be useful though for borderline candidates, who some times I will push into the next round if they wrote a nice thank you letter that is tailored made instead of the general ones you copy and paste.

Be a dick and send a a back-handed, insulting, email. It shows confidence and will make them want you even more. Same approach works for picking up women. Don't you guys know "the game"??

Example:

Sir,

Thanks for the phone interview. I think I might consider working there, but I really need to see if my other options pan out first. I would really kick myself if XYZ firm gave me an offer after locking in with you.

Later.

Hi,

I agreed with you. Any way, your ideal make me thinking about some thing for my project.

Apart from that, this link below may be useful: Interview thank you letter Pls try to keep posting.Tks and best regards

You can send a note to the senior folks in one email thanking them for the time and expressing your interest in the position. You can play it by ear on the analysts/associates, but I used to shoot them notes individually to personalize it a bit, though this is subject to individual preference.

Hope all goes well with you on the interview, and that you proceed to the superday :)

There's a closer meaning to my user name. Try reading it quickly. Perhaps you will then understand ;P

I'd recommend not bringing it up. It will just cause the interviewer to focus on that and potentially forget about the positive parts of the interview, especially since you are happy with your thought process for those problems.

Simply thank them and forget about it.

JK. From past experience those are the easier brain teasers...mostly because you can make shit up (which you should do if you get another). The harder ones have definitive answers that the interviewers know in advance. That being said I screwed up one of the latter pretty bad in a superday and still got the job. I agree, don't mention it and just send a glowing message about how much you loved the experience/people/blah blah.
