Do you work remotely?
Working from home is a large trend especially for those who work in tech. There was a recent study done by the Boston Globe saying that there is no definitive answer to whether allowing employees work from home is beneficial or detrimental to a company. For those of you who do work remotely, does it allow you to get more work done since you aren't distracted by office talk and a commute? Or do you find it to be more distracting to be at home? Lastly, do you think it hurts your chances of being promoted and excelling in your field since you aren't physically seen at your desk/office?
Yes, working at home is very cool. But it is not suitable for irresponsible people. I work as a consultant in one of the online stores, and it is still quite difficult. Now I have to somehow get out of my problem to write a term paper. I even hired the best coursework writing services for example Paidpaper.net to do things here and there from time to time.
I am a consultant and work from home when I am not at the client. Two rules that come to mind if trying to getting more work done at home:
1) NEVER work on the couch in front of the TV
2) get some good peripherals including some big honkin monitors, set this up at an actual desk
Have done both for many years. Love working from home when not with clients but it is not for everyone. You need to be focused and disciplined. Dedicated space, all the tech of a real office, etc.
Different slant. I run my own shop. Used to have everyone in a traditional office setting. After a long term lease expired I decided to rent a new space that had no office for me (on purpose)! Has a board room. Reason being, I essentially do three things:
So I come in to use the board room for meetings. The rest of the time I'm either with clients in their space or getting stuff done in my home office.
I decided to cut out all the rest of the office BS. Way more actual work done in far less time. You'd be amazed how much time is wasted by typical office banter. However, it's a fine line. Depends what role you play.
On average, I’ll work 1 day from home.
When I have deeper thinking to do (e.g. patents, white papers, technical content creation), these days are a god send because I work in an open office environment where it’s impossible to find this focus.
But when I don’t have shit to do, I’ll usually drink a pot of coffee while doing laundry, jam out to music, work out, go to Chipotle, watch SportsCenter / Bloomberg / PBS, surf the web, answer emails and take scheduled calls intermittently.
I’m not one to be in meetings, on calls or sending emails for the sake of pretending to appear busy. My end of week, end of year work product adds up. How I use that day is of no one’s concern, and that’s how I plan to keep it :)
This is awesome, and what I intend to do. I typically WFH about twice a month. Unless I have something with a pressing deadline, I am using the time more for myself. However, I am readily available the entire time and actively checking my email in case things come through. I would likely be a bit more productive if I was in the office, but it would be more so working to pass the time while I put in facetime, as opposed to diligent/productive work. I also try and use WFH days to grind out work related certifications. Definitely make sure you have a solid set-up (1-2 monitors, quiet area, good zen vibes, etc.).
I hate open office environments coupled with overbearing coworkers. I hate that my office setup is that computer monitors face the executives (they basically sit behind us in their offices). I loathe the question, "Whatcha' workin on right now?"
I hate that my back is to people so if they ask someone else, I get distracted and turn around too. I feel like I am much more productive either early early in the morning (before 7A) and after everyone leaves (7P). The rest of the day I try to get stuff done with a dozen interruptions.
I am more productive at the office, but that's mainly because I don't have a home office that I could be equally productive at. If I had a three monitor setup and a desk at home, there would be no difference. I regularly "work remotely" either by taking calls in my cars or answering emails on my phone while I'm on site though.
My fiancee works from home 1-2 days a week. She loves the peace and quiet and the lack of a commute.
lack of commute is the real MVP of working from home
roll out of bed 5 mins prior to your first meeting of the day
Same here. Also, working from home when my little one is home is hopeless.
I hate doing work from home and will literally drive into the office on a weekend even if it's only an hour of work. I'm just a lot faster and more confident when im in my cubicle.
lol
