Does a banking background hurt your b-school chances?
While it might be impressive to some people that you worked in banking, if you're gunning for a top 5 b-school doesn't it hurt your chances?
In any given year, there will be hundreds of former BB analysts applying for b-school. Most of them did not go onto KKR or join the Peace Corps, but fall somewhere in between. How do they go about differentiating themselves from the rest of the herd? HBS can only accept so many bankers.
Are you kidding? Banking is one of the best career tracks to get in to a top b-school. "hurt" is nowhere near the right word. Try and look at it carefully, a lot more people apply from banking than say photography, but as a percentage you have a much better chance.
I think you still need a good 'story' to have a real shot at the top Bschools. There ARE tons of BB kids just like you and thus you have to find something to differentiate yourself.
Yea that's what I struggle with. How do you craft a good story when you're working so frickin much
