Does anyone have any advice for me?
Hi guys,
I’m currently a freshman at The University of Alabama where I am an aerospace engineering major in the STEM Path to the MBA program. This program was pushed along by the current president and CEO of Lockheed Martin, a UA alumni. The program allows a select few STEM majors at the university the chance to earn an MBA in five years while they complete their chosen undergraduate major. The majority of people who graduate through this program end up as project managers and other slightly higher ranks in engineering firms than they would without the MBA. I however hope that I may be able to start a finance career after graduation. I have been interested in finance since I was probably 14 and have been watching stocks and making small trades and investments for the majority of my teenage years. Do you think I should expect to attract interest from large banks or investment and trading firms as a graduate from this program at UA? Also I do have a good bit of experience in several coding languages. Any insights and advice would be great.
Thanks,
James H. Taylor
Finance is broad - narrow down the type of work you're most interested in. Don't worry too much, your major will open up many doors. My advice would be to identify the skill-sets necesary for the type of role you're most interested in. If you're into IBD, you might want to first learn basic financial modeling like DCF/DDM or LBO model if you're interested in PE or running regressions/bayesian inference if you're into quant positions or stock pitch if you're into HF and so on and so forth.
