Does GPA matter after 1st job?

For undergrad, I went to a regional but non-national target and had a poor GPA(2.7) in Finance because I partied too much and honestly didn't give a crap for 2.5 years. I had one decent internship and managed to get an IBD interview with a boutique through a connection. Didn't think I had much of a chance but really nailed the interviews, hit it off with everyone, and got the offer. For you undergrads, this is surprisingly not that uncommon but that's beside the point. Have now been working for a little over a year and have some nice deal exposure to fill up my resume. Going forward, should I be concerned that my low GPA will hold me back in interviews? Or is it a moot point after someone's been out of school for a while? Obviously it will affect MBA chances but will future employers care or does it just come down to work experience post-college?

 

mega pe firms will, but it depends what u want to do.........but don't be discourage to try...b/c like in your case, anything can happen.... good job in nailing a banking gig with 2.7

 

We continue to put a heavy emphasis on GPA when interviewing candidates for a pre-MBA associate role. I know we also look at undergrad GPA when hiring MBAs. After that, its importance is significantly reduced. That said, solid recommendations and strong interviews would enable you to overcome the GPA issue (assuming you got past the initial resume screen).

A low GPA, especially under 3.0, will definitely be cause for concern as it pertains to your next position, especially pre-mba associate move, etc. Will it absolutely stop you from making a move, no, but I think you will definitely want to use your network more to try to get your resume into the right hands - those that could look past the GPA since you've got experience and a bit of internal support. Applying straight without inside support will definitely be tougher as your GPA will definitely send up a red flag - it won't be a deal breaker, but you've got to have a very good reason for the low GPA, have strong support from your current team, and really nail your interviews in general so that they realize the GPA is not indicative of your analytical and mental ability - GPA is a hard number, and even with strong experience, experiences can often be embellished on a resume - again, a strong interview helps to reduce those fears.

Frankly it largely depends on how long you're out of school before searching again. The longer you're out of school, the less it matters. If you're looking at 2-3 years though, GPA could still be an issue for some industries/companies you look at. That being said, good recs and referrals can help off-set concerns around GPA in the meantime. Congrats on finding a place you enjoy working - good luck!
