Does Greek Life matter after college?

Will a girl ever ask if you were in a fraternity in any situation post-graduation? It came up in a discussion with a fellow female SA one time, but we were both in college so its different.

DCDepository:
I was in a fraternity and I've never been asked once in 6 years since graduation if I was in a fraternity. I have brought it up in situations of self-deprecation, but that's about it.

This. Frats are pointless IRL and are often times thought of as a joke. GW Bush was often dismissed as a "frat boy" idiot even though he was in skull & bones, what Yalies like to call a "secret society"

No, not really. As the above poster mentioned, you only bring it up or hear someone talk about to make fun of themselves. For example, "I remember when I was young and dumb in college and did XYZ while in XYZ." Try not to mention it though, you dont want to come off as a frat boy. I think the only type I mentioned it was during a happy hour and everyone was messed up. The VPs were talking about the dumb things they did while they were in college, and they asked me so I talked about an incident in college regarding my frat. It was nothing ridiculous but just some tame humor.

a frat is a nice network post grad, if their are others who ended up in the same industry

Does it "matter" in that vapid chicks will think you're cooler if you were in a frat in college? No. Even in the Southeast where Greek life is huge, it only comes up if you're asking someone what school they went to, or finding common ground with a new contact, that sort of thing.

Don't really hear a ton of people kicking back and constantly reminiscing about their days in Alpha Beta Gamma ad nauseum.

It can if you want it to. In terms of recruiting, it provides a great network. In terms of a social life, its great to stay in touch with bros and reminisce on pledging and college days. but at the end of the day, does it really matter? only as much as you want it to. if you just constantly bring it up, people will think youre a tool usually. but if you are involved as an alumni mentor to your school's chapter, go to happy hour with your brothers to stay in touch pretty often, and use it to network for a job if you ever get laid off-then yea it can matter in the sense that it keeps you happy as an individual. but as a professional? not reeeally

I would avoid talking about greek life after college. I’ve dealt with enough frat boys to get pretty turned off when I meet the guy who still goes on and on about how amazing his life was in a frat and how cool he was, how many chicks be banged etc. And the guys that still act like they’re in a frat when they’re 26 make me want to blow my brains out with a shotgun the minute they start talking.

No, unless you keep in contact with your frat network, in which case it could be beneficial.

Like a few said, it can if you want it to. I am currently in a fraternity, and have met other fraternity guys during business functions and such and there is a sense of "camaraderie" even if they weren't in the same one. I understand from the outside looking in, we're all a bunch of obnoxious shitheads. However, I think after one exits college and enters the real world, all of that direct bragging and frat talk dies down a bit.

I have a buddy who was in my chapter that is up in NY right now as a 1st year IB analyst and his experience with it is that when talking with someone who was also in greek life as an undergrad, it gives them some common ground to start a connection with since they shared many similar experiences.

Obviously no one is going to be walking around in their letters frat-snapping to an 80's song and wearing costas with croakies around the workplace, but I do think that the experiences you had in greek life as an undergrad does stay with you and gives you some familiar ground with a good portion of people in the business world.

Those elephant-walking skills must come in handy...

J/k, anyways, a friend of mine got his BB job mainly because of his frat connections.

Being in a fraternity gives you an additional network to tap into when job hunting that non-greeks don't have access to. It can be a valuable resource especially if your school doesn't have ideal alumni connections in the companies you are targeting.

fraternity helped me secure an extremely competitive summer internship and job. but it wasnt BC i was in a specifically succesful frat. it was bc i meet a lot of people through greek life, both inside and outside my house. thats where the value of greek life comes into play, through meeting a lot of people.

GoodBread:
Could someone please order fraternities by prestige/exit opps into IB? Also a ranking of sororities by prestige/hotness would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

no offense, but this is an irrelevant question. if youre an undergrad thinking about joining a house, join one that has a good reputation and then make an earnest effort to meet a lot of people. thats all you need to worry about.

Yo dawg. Tightest frats that makes the biddies wet ranking:

Top: SAE, Sigma Chi, Pike

Upper Mid: Theta Chi, KA, SigEp

Mid: AEPi/ZBT/Sammy, Kap Sig, Pi Kapp

Lower Mid: FIJI, DU, Beta

Bottom: TKE, Phi Delt, Lambda

I would love to hear someone's take on GoodBread's question. I know the frats differ from campus to campus. The different sports frat vary depending on the campus...over time as well

If if don't make dollars, it don't make sense.

With regards to your original question, at least from my experience it almost always will in a social/dating perspective as you progress into familiarity.

From a business standpoint though, you don't want to come across as a college kid when you enter the workforce (they already know you're deadweight). My advice is to put it on your resume if you have space, you never know who will be interviewing you and it can be a stepping stone to a more informal interview which will be beneficial for the most part assuming you're not some awkward shitbird.

Ps. Keep in mind, the only thing people are doing in interviews is gauging your ability to think on your feet and communication ability. Technical tests are a pre-req. Anything you can do to ease conversation is a huge plus in this regard. -my $0.02
