Does Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing hire MBAs
Ok, Ive developed a strong interest in Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing partly because I'm actually interested in real estate and don't mind doing it for the long term and also because I assume it will have better hours than any investment banking coverage or product group.
Im applying to Wharton in round 2 and plan on majoring in Finance & Real Estate IF i get in. I'm just curious tho, does Morgan Stanley real estate investing hire fresh MBAs with no prior related work exp? I currently work in consulting but am hoping to make a switch post MBA.
The MS website is somewhat silent about MBAs on the real estate investment page. In fact the site says the summer associate program in merchant banking (of which real estate is a part) is a ten week program for undergraduates....??? Im honestly just curious...does MS Real Estate Investing have any formal program for MBAs and what are the typical entry criteria.
Thanks a lot guys
Of course they do. You might want to double check on the hours thing, though.
Ok boss...thats cool....but do u like need to have prior related experience or sumthin? plus are the hours also as crazy as banking :-(
Good friend is working in RE banking and he works ~100hours a week
I don't particularly care for MS RE Banking, its RE Investing im trying to find out about....
Yes they do hire MBA, but out of the 2 ppl I know they hired as summer associates (1 from Wharton), both have prior RE experience. PM for more info.
-Yes they hire out of MBA
-It will be very very difficult, pretty close to impossible, to land the gig without previous RE/finance experience
-If you work in NY your hours will probably still be pretty bad. Comparable to, if not worse than, other coverage groups. As of a few years ago the associates in NY worked on both banking and investing. The SF office only does investing and the hours will be better than your standard banking coverage group (unless RE deal activity comes back, though I don't see it coming back to anything close to what we saw 2004-2007 for a long time)
-The MSRE (includes banking and investing) MBA hires are part of the MS IBD associate program. Same recruiting, same training, same pay scale
Yeah MS RE Investing and Banking are mixed and people do both (at least the junior level I believe). Definitely don't go into this thinking you'll have light hours as i have friends in the group and they get worked
Thanks a lot gentlemen...this crash course on Morgan Stanley Real Estate has definitely served me better than weeks of poring over the deliberately ambiguousMS website in the hope of trying to come to a reasonable conclusion on my own....Thanx again and keep the answers coming.
Meanwhile, Is the MS RE Banking group all about pitching or are associates involved in the actual deals IF AND WHEN when they come up?
Also what are the odds of getting hired into the SF office right out of Wharton where if what i hear is true, MS RE is all about investing and not banking?
-You will execute deals when they come up
-It's a small group. 2-3 associates at any given time. They don't always hire a new associate so depending on the year you will be fighting for 0-2 spots.
