Does this count as "reneging"?

If you've told your contacts/interviewers over email (so there is written informal proof) that you would definitely be taking an offer from them if it was extended, and you actually get the offer and not actually take it in lieu of another investment bank with a stronger brand, how bad would that be? What are the risks in this scenario? Obviously it's been discusses and concluded that if you SIGN and renege, there will be a definite risk, but how about if you've just told them over email?
