Don't know what steps to take to break in to IB from here
Greetings,
I am a 22 year old non target based in NY majoring in finance and minoring in law graduating in dec 2021. I have 2 years of experience interning at a HF (not currently working there or anywhere right now). Besides that I have done an accounting internship for a fashion retailer and have investment club experience pitching and some dcf modeling (that I definitely need brushing up on) I've decided I'd like to get into IB as I am fascinated by M&A and would ultimately like to end up full time at a HF and I believe I need some sell side experience under my belt to do so. Have only one good friend in IB that I will be asking for advice soon but thought I would ask WSO as well... some questions/concerns I have are:
1.is it too late?
2. Is it possible for me to get a full time analyst position with out any IB SA experience?
3. Where should I start?
Thank you and absolutely any guidance or tips would be appreciated.
Hey! Limited experience here but my very idealistic advice is as follows:
Talk to the folks who worked at the HF. Assuming you did work on research or the trading floor, talk to them! Prolly a good chunk of them are coming from IB and they might connect you with some folks. You worked at a hedgefund don’t underplay that.
Thank you, will definitely reach out to them, any advice on how to approach it?
Coffee chats are wonderful. The point of internships is to find mentors that will connect you to their people. Talk to them about maybe frustrations or something, but only AFTER you establish connections with them. Being honest but respectful is the best way to go about it imo.
I see you are minoring in law. Do not consider entering the profession/going to law school. PM me if you want to speak to a former lawyer. Best of luck on the other endeavors.
Ok lol I wasnt really considering law school in the first place anyway , thank you though!
Would be interested to see a post on your journey from law to finance. And reasons why you would not recommend law.
If you look at my profile you will see a number of thorough posts addressing both topics. Please feel free to PM me with any questions or if you want to discuss further.
Can’t you get a position at the HF?
They weren't too into hiring/promoting internally honestly, and they lost a majority of AUM during the pandemic so that plus the fact that I hadn't graduated yet and no sell side experience I believe didn't get me a full time offer. They were always encouraging me to look elsewhere...kind of shitty.
Oh ok maybe someone can at least get you an interview somewhere.
