Double Degree: do I have a shot?

Hi everyone!

I am a master student in management at Bocconi. I am planning to apply for a double degree with a partner university and I would like to now whether I have a shot or not.

Quick CV overview:
- Bachelor grade: translated to a 108/110 Italian grade (Belgian Bachelor in Business Engineering), member of an investment club at my school
- I hold a Master in Business Economics
- Experience: no experience or internship in large companies, though I have been working for 2 years now for a small Belgian REIT and I have been organizing sports courses and camps through a non-profit I manage.

The assessment is based on the bachelor grade (70%) and on the CV and motivation (30%). I have quite good oral presentation skills so I feel generally at ease during interviews.

There are quite a lot of students in my masters and not so much spots for DDs. After a quick LinkedIn research I realized that a very large majority of selected students in the previous years are Italian.

Do you think I have a shot for a double degree spot?

So you have a bachelor, then a first master in business and you are currently enrolled to another master at Bocconi? Given your bachelor grade and knowign how high are grades in Italy on average, I think you will face many guys with 110/110 and 110 with laude so you will need some CV plus and having worked 2 years should be quite valuable. Maybe you will not get a place at a top university given the high level of competition, but I suggest you to at least try to compete for the DD.

Depends on the partner unversity, I'd say - for HEC or RSM, where there are more applicants and selection is tougher, you might have difficulties (I've seen someone with 110 cum laude and great GMAT getting rejected HEC), but otherwise you should be fine. That being said, unless you're aiming for a Phd, it looks to me you should focus on getting more experience (assuming your REIT job was part-time?) - I've got this feeling that double-degrees are sometimes seen by recruiters as two half-degrees.

I am actually hesitating to take my GMAT again and to do an internship this year instead of studying as I am indeed in need of professional experience. I'd focus on that this year and apply for top MIMs next year.

Do you think it's a better idea?

are you doing plain management or IM at Bocconi? (there's a huge difference) I agree with commedian, what would you like to do next ? if a Phd then focus on your grades and your modules (and maybe apply for that double degree). If you want to work (whatever the field may be) then try to get some relevant experience. JM2C

Management, not the IM one unfortunately. Some people here do not agree with you about the huge difference. There is obviously a big difference in selectivity but whether the difference is huge for career prospects in case I get good grades is quite unclear (some people previously argued that this difference was not that important).

Anyway, I got rejected for this one due to a poor GMAT (640) for which I had only about two weeks to prepare.

If I stop the management program now and start studying in order to take the GMAT at the end of December/beginning of January (before the round 2 deadlines), I think I could get great scores. Plus, getting a great internship offer for the second term would make my profile quite competitive for top-programs at great school right?

Regarding what I want to do, I definitely want to work afterwards (Consulting or VC/PE funds). Research is not really my cup of tea.

i know many people at bocconi ( i AM ITALIAN), and yeah there's a big difference in terms of prestige. Btw you have the bocconi brand anyway, which place good. If I were you, i would continue the programmed you are currently enrolled in, focusing on getting good internship and not paying attention to your gmat score/the fact that you screwed it up. I know guys from your same program that got internship in good companies in LDN (even Big4 or good PE). So it should not be a big deal to carve out a good career path. Hope it helps
