Dream internship posted but I won't be available to apply.

Hi WSO, been a longtime lurker now but finally have a good question.

So my dream internship, one I was planning to cold contact the firm for, has been posted exclusively for my local finance club. I spent two hours perfecting my CV, and cover letter until I re-read the final internship offer. It said that the internship term would be in spring 2018, and I won't be available for spring as I'm going on an exchange that semester.

I don't want one of my lives biggest opportunity to pass me by, so I'm thinking about emailing HR or the one responsible for the internship an inquiry to contact me or so when they have another offer. Is this a good idea or does it make me seem arrogant as if I know that I would have gotten it, and therefore I'm disappointed and such?

The firm is a small PE shop. They are relatively new but their CEO is a big name portfolio manager with lots of experience behind him. I believe that this is their first time taking in interns.

Please help, WSO.

Honestly, I know it's just an internship but its a special shop. It's like if Warren Buffett started accepting interns, it wouldn't just be any internship. It's hard for me to explain but I think this specific internship could really springboard my career/life as this one shop differs from the others by many factors.
