Who takes weekend trips?

A lot of guys here at my internship are taking weekend trips: going solo or with girlfriend. Flying in saturday morning and coming back sunday night. I would love to do shit like that as well. Not only is it cool to travel, it also helps you to do develop more as a human.

The problem here is that I would be traveling solo. Anyone have some tips how to approach this (I'm in europe btw)? Do you guys have time to take short weekend trips during the year?

Just take RyanAir and stay at party hostels. Best way to meet people.

Whenever I get a free weekend and F1 is on I go for qualifying and the race. (Europe only obviously) It's great, you meet up with a cool bunch of people, watch the qualifying, go out that night and then the pain of the night gone by has left you by lunchtime when the race starts.

By weekend you mean thursday/friday right? I think meeting someone in person is a lot better than over the phone and it will definitely help you. but it isnt absolutely necessary. that said - would you feel comfortable asking someone to push your resume when you dont even know what they look like (outside of linkedin profile stalking)? imagine how it would be for them.

So I see that people usually do these weekend trips to NYC to have quick coffee chats with alumni. Well, I could potentially do that as I live in Boston and going to NYC is not that much of a big deal, but was wondering if I could substitute these weekend trips with a phone call.

I would say if you have the ability to meet in person, it absolutely trumps just talking over the phone. You're lucky you are in Boston. I live in Texas and I'm still planning on making a weekend trip sometime in the summer to grab drinks/lunch/coffee with alumni.

If you were meeting with me and you showed up in a suit I would be highly disappointed as you would have ruined my mood for the rest of the day. However that's me and I do not approve of my own advice in situations with others.

If I was meeting someone for coffee on a weekend and they showed up in a suit, I'd kinda think you're an idiot (just like people that go to shitty bars on a Saturday night wearing a three-piece = tool). Agree with Heister on this. Just don't show up in sweat pants.

In my book, for a first time meeting (if you've been cold calling), I recommend a suit. For somebody you have an established relationship with, b-casual is okay.

On the weekend, seriously? This is ridiculous. Also, why are you meeting cold calls on the weekend anyways? That's kind of an obnoxious request...

If you've talked to the person before, jeans and a button down are sufficient.

You all can do what you want, but I'd never be caught dead in biz casual on a weekend. Suit, maybe, but only at a wedding.

The goal in most cases, outside of actual interviews, is to approximate what the other person is going to be wearing. If they are analysts working on the weekend, they sure as hell won't be in business clothes.

During the week then, yes, wear biz casual or a suit, depending on the dress code for the firm you are meeting.

Actually though - if it was their call wear khakis, a button down and loafers. Throw on a solid sweater if its cold. Literally impossible to offend anybody (suit can come off as trying too hard, jeans can come off as not serious).

oh! that's a cool question to handle, i always enjoy wearing according to the occasion or place, for eg. if i am near a beach i would prefer jeans and loose shirt with no makeup. In your case you can easily chill out with any casuals not to worry.

If it's someone older (VP/MD), wear slacks and a dress shirt.

If it's someone younger (Analyst/Associate), wear whatever you'd like. I would personally wear jeans, a sweater, and nice shoes.

Do not wear a suit on a weekend. No one likes people who wear suits when there is not a need to. This includes to the bar (acceptable if you go straight from work to out Mon-Fri. or are at a function on a Saturday night and go out after) or in casual networking situations.

If this meeting was in the office on a weekday, you'd without question be wearing a suit.

If it's someone older or someone put you on/arranged this meeting for you, go business casual at the least and do not do jeans. Speaking from experience, a friend met another friend's dad/CEO of AM firm and showed up in jeans to ask for an internship on a the weekend.

Bottom line, if you are meeting with a multi millionaire or billionaire on his/her weekend time show up looking like you want them to take you seriously and not like some sloppy kid

Define "weekend" also if you are in the midwest I would say Chicago. Its close enough to actually enjoy a weekend and not spend the entire time on a plane/at the airport.

Chicago is a good choice, but if you want a sense of the South, Dallas isn't a bad choice either. This ultimately comes down to what you define a "good" weekend is. Another words, what is your current life style and how exactly do you want to spend that solo weekend? What type of entertainment are you interested in? Drinking, partying, crazy night life? Or the opposite? Visiting scenic/historical places, museums, food-tasting, and etc.

Agree with the above - specifically the questions. What are you interested in? Weekends are short, especially regular ones. Sometimes what I out here in HK or wherever in Asia is just to show up to the airport with no real plan/destination in mind and pick a place that's within a 3hr flight. Only take a small carry-on (eg. a bookbag) with a few supplies (usually a book at least). Once I land, I figure things out. It's pretty cool and you make up stuff as you go along.

Worse comes to worse, the place sucks and you'll end up holed up in a hotel room, watching ESPN having takeout and beers (which frankly can be a nice escape from the grind) or drinking at the one local bar which has a few good beers.

Have fun!

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.

if I was travelling alone for pleasure, I'd go somewhere relaxing like puerto rico, flights are pretty cheap & quick and you can just sit your ass on the beach all day and recharge. alternatively, you could go to Charleston, they have an airport and it's beautiful this time of year. plus, college is back in and I shouldn't have to tell you how awesome CofC girls are.
