Dresscode on the Trading Floor
Hey, I'll be interning this summer in S&T. I have to go shopping for clothes before I go. I was wondering what's the dresscode? Will I have to suit up every single day? or is it more relaxed? I imagine it varies between banks but generally speaking how do people dress on the day to day in S&T and how should I being an intern? Thanks!
This is something you need to ask your contacts at the bank about. Ask the person in charge of your desk or one of your 'mentors'.
either its suits or dress shirt/pants - u just need to find out one. not that difficult.
who requires suits on the floor?
they still have their traders wear suits. most firms on the street have gone to business cas (dress shirt + slacks, no tie), but a couple are still formal.
Lehman and Deutsche are the only two that require suits that I can think about. Neither requires on to wear the jacket while on the desk, so it is basically tie, shirt, and suit pants. Also, DB has a business casual dress code in the summer months.
Rumor has it that Anshu Jain liked wearing his Savile Row suits so much that he adopted a business formal dress code in DB Global Markets. As not to be embarrassed by better dressed traders, IBD had to follow suit.
Lehman is formal, but you won't have to wear your jacket every minute of the day. I was just there and most guys were in tie/shirt with jacket hung on chair or not even there.
Thanks a lot! yeah I've heard before that Lehman tends to be more formal than the rest
wow, that sucks to have to wear suits.
you don't wear suits where you work Jimbo?
uhh, hell no.
what is it then? just shirt and slacks?
business casual my friend...ppl will wear polo shirts on trading floors in the summer.
polo shirts!? wow I didn't see that one comming, probably not interns i bet, we probably have to dress nicer to make a good impression
yeah, don't wear the polos but ppl will definitely wear polos and even jeans sometimes.
Suits but no ties - unless you are being dragged in with sales to meet a client naturally - and business casual during the summer.
Having said this if u make the money do what u like, it has been known for people to roll up in football shirts...
Very true. Some of the top guns on the energy desk on my floor show up in jeans n t-shirts and nobody seems to complain.
What to wear when shadowing a trader? (Originally Posted: 12/19/2013)
Hey guys I have a few meetings set up to shadow some traders at different banks and was wondering what is acceptable attire for this? Should I wear a suit or just go business casual like all the other people on the floor?
I realize that the average trade floor is much less formal than other finance areas but you can't go wrong with a suit (no tie) and just take the jacket off if necessary. Worst case, one of the guys ribs you and asks if you are on the wrong floor.
You should wear one of these:
One of these: http://fizmarble.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/880533_black_…
Go with the suit. It shows professionalism and demonstrates the idea that you are putting yourself beneath whoever you may be shadowing.
suit or sportscoat/dress pants. Tie is optional, but cannot hurt, id say go with it. Pretend its an interview
well, shadow is black, so look the part
