Drinking at corporate functions

In ethics class today the topic of personal integrity came. We started talking about how what you do in your free time reflects on your firm. The professor suggested that we don't drink at corporate functions. Someone in the class pointed out that that may cause a wedge between you and other coworkers who are drinking (being labeled an outcast etc.)

What do you guys think? Do you think differently of a coworker who doesn't drink when you guys go to happy hour after work?

No one is going to look down on someone for having a drink at a function in which other people are drinking..

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"

@bigtool05 - exactly. Seems like a pretty weird example to use for business ethics, especially when there are much better "what-ifs" to discuss.

As for the OP, some people drink and some people don't. Whatever. But if you do drink and then don't at corporate events just to look good, eventually some will figure it out, and it'll just look weird. Just relax, have a few beers and enjoy yourself, cause chances are, all of your superiors are doing the same thing.

Absolutely drink...your coworkers will open up at these events as the booze gets flowing and it's more fun to be on their level. Just control yourself. Nothing wrong with putting back several just don't be chugging or doing anything that makes it obvious how much you are drinking.
