Duke vs. Harvard/Yale/Stanford/MIT/Columbia
I'm currently a freshmen at Duke University. I want to break into the ibanking industry after graduation as an analyst for a top firm (GS, MS, ML, etc.) I will probably major in econ with a minor in math.
I'm deciding whether to try and transfer to either Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, or Columbia in an attempt to bolster my chances at gaining an internship and subsequently a job offer. I know Duke is a target school, but what would be the 3 or 4 more heavily recruited universities?
Is there a big disparity between those schools and Duke which would make it worth transferring?
God..no...Duke was like Top 5 represented at my firm (think GS/MS)
Now please don't be a tool and go to tailgate and enjoy basketball season too
If it's a target...I would feel that so long as you have that stellar GPA, extracurriculars, etc, it won't matter.
duke is a top notch school... you guys are tied with us (columbia) in the usnews rankings, remember?
Duke is an amazing school, its way better socially than MIT, Harvard. I would stay there absolutely maybe turn it down if I got into Yale, but again that's a maybe.
But is Harvard, Yale, and Stanford more heavily recruited for ibanking than Duke?
Yes, Harvard, Yale, and Stanford are more heavily recruited than Duke... by much? Absolutely not. Do you like your school? If so, stay there. There's no reason for you to go to one of these other schools unless you feel that the fit would be better. Duke is well-perceived on the street; we had a bunch in this year's class (think GS/MS/ML/JPM).
HYPSW would probably have more recruitment than Duke, but I wouldn't turn it down still. Waaayyyy better looking Southern woman instead of those yankee girls and awesome sports facilities so you can actually enjoy your undergrad experience and still come out with outstanding oppurtunities.
Well I can tell from first-hand experience that Duke girls are sub-par at best. Plus, I'd much rather prefer the urban northeast to the south. Stanford would be good becuase it is also close to home. Although I've made plenty friends here and will most likely continue to do so in the next year/s, I'll make friends and meet people anywhere I go. Plus, the athletic and frat dominated culture of Duke is starting to wear me down.
So, as of now, I'm pretty sure that I will try to transfer to either Harvard, Yale, or Stanford as an incoming junior.
It's not worth it to transfer if your only goal is to get into banking... Duke is well-recruited as is. Look up John Mack

...Duke is better then fine, transfering would be ridiculous. Half of Goldman Sachs' sales staff in rates and FX is from Duke. That's just one example but Duke is really well represented on Wall St.
Transferring is prestige-obsessed idiocy in this scenario.
How the hell do you prefer Northern women to Southern women, there the biggest b-itches I've ever met. I mean seriously you can't even go to seconds without them shuting up; its so god damn annoying. Also, I ain't some idiot Southern guy I was raised in the North and compared to Southern people they are the biggest a-holes I've ever met. But whatever, its your choice in the end and i've given my .02.
Dude - you're still in high school. You're way too opinionated and lack any relevant experience to back it up. The broad generalizations are a dead giveaway of your maturity level. If not, the use of "to" instead of "two", thinking using the word "ain't" is going to support your assertion that you're not "some idiot southern guy raised in the north," and your inability to use asshole instead of a-hole, would have given you away just as quickly. Not to mention your previous thread did.
Soak the info in. Learn. Don't form such strong opinions so quickly. People will surprise you.

If the only reason you'd leave Duke is for recruitment purposes, then don't bother. Duke is well represented.
Duke is okay. Don't transfer if you like it there. Some prejudice regarding smirky lacrosse and Southern social culture (both inaccurate but the prejudices are there among some people and most firms). You would not be the first Dukey hired at any firm.
Is the Fuqua MBA program well represented on Wall St?
I guess not that much as the ugrad, but is it still decent?
"I'm currently a freshmen at Duke University. I want to break into the ibanking industry after graduation as an analyst for a top firm (GS, MS, ML, etc.) I will probably major in econ with a minor in math. "
I like the econ/math combo. hell it's what i did.
duke is well represented across the street...as a college it's not as good as mit/yale/harvard/stanford. it is as good as columbia.
either way, you'll be fine for recruiting. so go to cosmic cantina and get a burrito and quit worrying ;)
I'm a freshman at UChicago. I'm also looking into transferring, but mainly because of cost issues (Uchicago's finaid sucks, ivies give money out much more liberally). From what I've gathered, Harvard isn't accepting any more transfers for the next two years due to housing overfill. Stanford last year received 1400 transfer applications, from which they admitted 23, which comes out to a 1.6% acceptance rate. I'm not sure about the other three schools (Columbia, MIT, Yale) but I wouldn't be surprised if it's equally as hard/impossible to transfer into.
By the way, what's the word on UChicago as far as recruiting goes?
