East-coast MBA >> LA IB. How difficult is it to do this?
How hard is it to recruit for LA IB from an east-coast M7 MBA?
Is there any structured LA recruiting? Are LA-based IBs even interested in east-coast MBAs? How much should I expect to be in LA for face-time, chats, treks, etc?
Found this thread to be super helpful, but didn't talk much about the feasibility/effort needed to make it happen: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/ib-in-los-…

It's very possible, you just have to overcome a few hurdles:
Having a strong "why LA" story. A lot of east-coasters don't make it past this point. The worry here is that you're applying to LA for fun but you're also applying everywhere in NY, and then you end up deciding you want to be in NY after all (taking a NY summer internship offer, or even worse doing a summer in LA and going FT in NY). Strong East Coast candidates have, e.g. family in LA, they lived in LA at some point, or they are only recruiting in LA / on the West Coast.
Structured recruiting depends on the bank, but at the very least a lot of times if you show up, for example, at our bank's NY group on-campus recruiting, you can tell them that you are interested in LA and they will pass your resume on to us
You need to show up in LA as much as you can. A lot of programs do a "West Coast trek" or something similar, but the candidates that catch our attention are the ones that come back to LA several times and sit down with us for coffee chats. It's no different from what West Coast MBA students have to do when they recruit for NY banks
Happy to go into any more detail or answer questions.
Really helpful response - you mind if I message you directly?
Sure thing, let me know if any issues with the PM system (sometimes new users can't message etc.)
This is useful and relevant information for anyone recruiting outside of New York City FWIW.
Great share.
Thanks, as one further consideration point, it's important to remember that recruiting at a satellite office is a lot more personal. You're recruiting into that specific group with those specific people, and so HR is a lot less involved and influential. This has pros and cons, because there are plenty of people that would be strong enough for a given bank, or another group, but who may not jive well with the team culture. As a result, the standard interview question, "Why this bank?" at a regional office is really asking for insights into a candidate's fit with the team and group.
Seems fairly easy if you are from MBA business schools">M7 and actually will take the SF offer.
Synergy_or_Syzygy Do you mind me asking some questions directly as well?
