So if the cost of enclosures shot up by $120 (40% of 300).
To keep the total display cost the same, you need display cost to be $380 (500-120). So wouldn't you simply do (380/500) to get your answer?
The website, however, insists the answer is where you do (120/500).
Am I mistaken here? I feel so stupid for asking this but oh well.
1-(380/500) = (500-380)/500 = 1-(0.76) = 120/500 = 24%

To get a total of 2000, you must reduce display cost by 24% ($120). You just need to look at the bigger picture, and ask yourself if those percentages make sense.
ie: is 120 really 76% of 500? No way man.
