Econ Research/Professor?

Hey guys, I'm a rising freshman and I'll be studying economics. I'm really interested in the subject and I would go so far as to so say I'm passionate. I think a cool job would be to be a tenured professor/researcher in economics for a university. I'll probably be going into banking right after undergrad. This probably isn't as common of a path, but does anyone know if it's possible to go the economics PhD and researcher/professor route after going into banking?

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm not going to do banking with the intention of hoping to get an economics PhD though, that's a separate interest altogether.

Well, I'm a rising freshman at an undergrad and I didn't know to approach professors for research opportunities while in high school. Maybe I should have tried that though. I'll definitely be contacting professors for research opportunities now though.

No need for having done research in high school. Just 1.) RA for professors (recommendations are important for grad school) and 2.) take a lot of math classes - econ PhD is heavily math-based and lots of math/physics majors end up going in. Top schools generally require now real analysis to be competitive. If you like those two things, econ PhD might be right for you and will make you competitive for admission as well.

Banking has absolutely no connectivity to Economics research / academia. If you really want to get into the latter, scrap banking and start taking as many math classes as you can early on so you can get into a good PhD program right out of undergrad. There is a lot of really interesting stuff being studied in the field of behavioral economics that is way more interesting, and way more challenging, than banking.

The only thing banking is going to do is make you forget all of the mathematical concepts you'll learn in undergrad and force you to have to take refresher courses before getting your PhD. Any program worth attending is also going to cost you nothing and pay you a research stipend, so it's not like you are even going to need to save money doing banking or something like that.
