Economics major trying to break into finance industry

A little background about me: I'm a third year economics major at UT Austin with a 3.2 cumulative GPA.

I have applied to every business related internship that is located in Houston for the past 4 months. However, I have had no luck. I have a few extracurriculars - e.g. a leadership position in a business organization and was a mentor for an economics organization. Also, it is important to note that even though my GPA is low, I have worked my ass off throughout the past two years trying to it up from a 1.8 (my first semester) to what it is now. Yet, it hasn't really payed off.

I feel lost when it comes to things like employment decisions since no one in my family has a college education (not their fault, I'm not blaming them). I guess what I'm looking for is advice and pointers that could make me more competitive since i feel like i am disadvantaged since most business (specifically finance) internships are very technical, and my degree doesn't fit the qualifications.

What should i do?
