Egoistic AF Analyst 1
Thoughts on how to deal with egoistic AF analyst 1 who:
- Don’t want to be managed
- Go over you to the VP and MD
- Are non -collaborative
- Do not want to page flip or wait to sign off
- Lie about being busy when they are at the gym
Keep in mind this is their first corporate job and frankly they are wrong on half their models but don’t sant direction or inputs.
TIA for your inputs. While I am giving in my resignation this week, would be great to hear your thoughts.
Not a 3rd year analyst myself, but curious on what your intent would be. Would it be to really support and give meaningful advice, or do you want to downright criticize him? I could provide my input on how I would hope a 3rd year analyst would approach me (1st year) if I was being egoist, assuming it's the former.
Former: support and give meaningful advise.
Speaking from experience, you’re both probably 1) not as bright as you think you are and 2) pricks.
I could probably flip your list around from his POV:
You need to both 1) try as hard as possible to be the “chill associate” and 2) be more open about your expectations of the kid. If he’s still unstaffable, tank him.
Gotta know by now how to calc market cap. Consistent wrong formulas
if he is wrong all the time and goes directly to the VP/MD, then do nothing, the VP will put him in his place. If the VP prefers to skip over you and work directly with him, then seems like he’s actually putting in quality work and the VP isn’t as hierarchical as you are...
Why don’t you just have this exact conversation with the analyst? And say you don’t want to be critical but noticed some errors being repeated, signing off early (only if he/she is actually avoiding important deadlines and logging off before midnight).
Also how do you know he/she is lieing and in the gym? I feel like that has to be an assumption but either way you should let people go to the gym if there is nothing pressing..
