Energy banking NY

Looking to find out the best firms in New York that specialize in energy (or have energy branches/departments)

Currently in MS of Energy Finance and wondering where to look for opportunities in NY.

Thanks

They all have small portions of the group there, of course. But Houston is the center (from an oil and gas perspective).

For someone who has focused their education on energy finance, I think you really have to want to be in New York to pass on the opportunities Houston offers in the field. And if you stick with it, you'll be traveling to Houston all the time regardless.

Obviously all of this is predicated on a desire to do energy investment banking. If you end up wanting to do industry energy finance, then my advice goes double.

Upstream groups are in the regional offices (Houston, London, Hong Kong, Calgary, Dubai etc). Most NY offices have midstream and downstream as well as power and "other" (which includes coal and clean tech). Several groups (Barcap and several others) have M&A folks in NY that go to the regional offices on large global deals. Virtually all BBs have financing groups (ECM, LevFin, DCM, PP) based in NY that cover energy.

The short answer is pretty much every BB has folks in NY that do energy. The heads of pretty much every global BB energy group is based in NY. Its not the worst place if you can get the right team. But the posts above are right that the upstream groups are where the majority of the hottest deals are out of and those are based in the regions. Downstream is a tough business, as is "other". Power and Midstream can be awesome on the right platform. If you are really in an MS financing group, you should be able to pretty easily covertly get intel on who does what from which office at each firm. Any headhunter should be able to give you the lay of the land as well.

Good luck.
