Do I need to disclose or unwind my portfolio before starting my IB internship?
hey guys! I’m starting an investment banking summer analyst internship in a few weeks and just finished the onboarding process. I just realized, after completing everything, that I was never once asked about like my personal holdings or anything like that. Anyway, I have a small portfolio of stocks (~$1000) that I currently own. Should I unwind this? Should I reach out to HR? Should I do nothing?
Thanks for the insight!
I’m not sure if this is relevant, but I’ll be working at a bulge bracket bank if that’s helpful information.
Dude you'll be making powerpoints. If you have to unwind your portfolio to avoid a conflict of interest with MSFT then I'll be dissapointed in your bank.
Hundred percent certain you don't have to unwind (I owned shares in a company that's a client of a bank prior to joining, and I mentioned it during the interview, and the recruitment guy said it's okay to hold onto what I already own). You're an intern, and it's a small portfolio, it's definitely not worth disclosing. It's highly unlikely that any of your stocks will be your banks' clients. Even if they were, you have no obligation to unwind what you already own. That sort of stuff only happens when you work at the Fed, iirc.
I'm surprised you didn't have to disclose. Part of my onboarding was disclosing any brokerage accounts for my SA. That being said, I assume it's on HR to deal with this, so I think if they don't say anything to you then don't worry about it. It's probably because its an online internship so you won't be working on live deals.
Isn't there something that you actually cannot hold shares other than S&P500 ETFs? I remember that in Big4 I had to disclose everything, so I would be suprised if you don't need to disclose it in IB
