ER interview...with Head of Research?
I'm now going to the 2nd and final round for the Associate position where I was told I will be interviewing with the Head of Research. Just wondering what questions will be asked (If it will be more of a 'fit the culture' questions or more technical).
The 1st round with the Analyst went well I think. I think he likes me and knows I would be a good fit since I have experience being an ER Associate. But I think the hiring decisions are ultimately up to the Head of Research. Just wondering if there are anything that I can do/say that could make me stand out, given the competitiveness of the job market.
Thank you
Unless they are specifically billed as a technical interview it will be mostly fit with a few technicals thrown in for good measure. However, if you already have experience, especially in the sector they would put you in, expect to discuss trends in the sector and any recent big news. Technicals, in as much as there will be any, will be fairly standard "how do you value a company" or "how do you calculate cost of capital." If you profess knowledge about any sector they will ask you about it, so make sure you don't even bring up something like shopping at the Gap unless you want to talk about it from an ER prospective.
The person with the most say over you getting hired is the analyst you will report to. The head of research is thinking more long term how you will fit into the team. You can expect them to ask about your writing ability and how you think you will progress and if you think ER is for you.
I think that pretty much sums up what I think will be asked. I was thinking maybe even global macro economy or any country's economy will be fair game as well?
I would expect US market specific questions if any. Unless the expected coverage has a large international exposure I wouldn't expect to get much global macro or specific country (outside the US) questions.
Your view on whether the S&P500 is over or undervalued could be fair game. Whether you think it, or any other index, might retrace, is fair game. Your viewpoint on consumption in the US as well. However, none of these have true answers, they just want to hear you talk and back up a view point.
Keep in mind that many of the Global Macro questions will be "answered" by internal economists, not by ER personnel. So, most firms have a dedicated group to provide views on GDP, Interest Rates, Currency, and most other Macro trends. Then you follow what they say to give the firm a unified voice.
Always remember, aside from the most basic questions, most questions be they for ER, consulting, IB or PE don't have right answers. They just want to hear you talk and justify something.
You have been very helpful!
