I am working at a boutique sell side research firm for 2 years. I have an MBA (not an ivy) and working towards my CFA level 1. What is my exit strategy from the sell side and to move to a hedge fund? Any suggestions and inputs would be helpful. Also, is it of any value to do another MBA from an Ivy? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I have recently received an offer from SIG in their equity research division. In a few years I would like to move to a good HF (between $1B-$10B). Specifically looking at L/S, fundamental value, etc. Is this realistic? How is SIG ER with regards to placement? Does it matter whether it is BB ER or boutique ER? Also, moving from ER to HF I hear is more about having good, actionable ideas (vs IB where it is a standardized process with headhunters). Can anyone shed some light on this?

Hey thanks a lot for the response, +1SB. I have looked at some of these, but will definitely look over the rest. I was just curious, from SIG specifically what the ops are. Or, for a proxy, who do people in similar smaller ER shops along the same level as SIG seem to place? Does it really just depend on the quality of the your ideas?

Man I were you I would take it. Sell side isn't a happy place now and I wonder it will ever be again.

Yea, I am not trying to rush anything, I was just wondering. I want to stay in ER forever at this point. Does anyone do that or is the buyside always the end goal?
no working at a hedge fund is always a possibility. remember that hedge funds are part of the buyside. some analysts start on the buyside and stay there. There is no set time to transition from sell-side to buyside. It all depends on where the opportunities are (and how much they pay you).
I would either try to make the transition after 2-3 years, or wait until MD.
Sooner rather than later. Ideally, you want to build the appropriate skillset on the sell-side, but still be raw enough to learn and delve into the fund's strategy. It might be difficult for someone who's been the on the sell-side for 10-15 years to transfer to a completely different mindset on the buy-side.
2 years ER -> MBA --> HF?
