Evaluate my plan?
I'm only a freshman at a target school (top 10 private) and hope to go into investment banking after graduation. I'm not really planning on doing much this summer except for reading a lot of books and getting a job.
Next summer, after sophmore year, Im going to try and get a hedge fund internship because Im interested in investing and the buy-side. Also, im from California and would much rather stay close to home for that summer so Im going to specfically try and obtain a hedge fund internship in California.
Will the fact that I'm not doing an ibanking internship in NYC hurt my chances of getting an ibanking internship at a BB for the summer after junior year?
Yes, I guess im a little paranoid but who can afford not to be in this economic environment?
No, it won't hurt.
But what makes you so confident that you can get a good hedgefund internship next year if you decide to do nothing this year?
I'd have to agree. If you know your interest, go for it now..there are sophomores who are probably just as qualified as you are taking those positions so there's no reason not to try.
Do a lot of networking this summer to land an internship with a hedge fund for next summer. If you can do that, things might pan out to your liking. Also, I suggest you broaden your plans, i.e. don't just look at hedge funds, look at everything including PE and VC.
What would you suggest I do this summer to land a good hedgefund internship next year?
And how exactly do I start networking this summer..? Yes im new to all of this.
Why dont you just enjoy whats left of your first year and do a laid back summer.
I see no reason you couldn't try to intern somewhere this summer - you said you'll be getting a job anyway, it certainly won't hurt to have multiple internships by the time you get to SA recruiting
Yeah, I would try to get an internship this summer. Private wealth management jobs at satalite offices are normally somewhat easy to get.
I would recommend you try for an internship this summer..
Hmm...well i didnt really want an internship this summer because I felt like this was really the last summer where I'll actually be home and could spend time with family. After this summer, I will be busy with internships and employment later on.
Also, Im planning on taking some classes this summer.Probably 1 or 2. Is there any way I could possible cordinate both an internship and classes?
I'd suggest a gig at a local PWM office... the hours won't be bad and you will be able to stay close to home and still see friends. As for classes, does your university offer online courses? You could do 1 or 2 classes that way to cover prereqs and make your course load easier without killing yourself, or some schools will do a whole class in a week or two over the summer for 3+ hours a day. If you did that at the tail end of summer you could do it after your internship was over.
Also, I tried to do a search on google for hedge funds in California but the results were pretty poor.
Can anyone direct me to some website or database where there is a list of hedge funds in California?
If I decide not to do an internship this summer, what else can i do to make myself more attractive when applying for finance internships next summer after sophmore year?
THANKS

if you trust yourself, find an economic or business topic that fascinates you and write a very good article, then get it published in an undergraduate journal.
you should also take time to study on the industry - I'd suggest reading three to four books a week. There are plenty of good suggestions onhere if you search, and amazon can suggest more. I could give you a rundown of my library if you'd like.
volunteering always looks good as well - you could even start a charity
finally, you could study for the gmat and record an 800 to get it out of the way
