Evening based finance jobs.
Finishing up a BS in finance this coming May from a non-target NYC college, 3.3 gpa and 3.8 in major. I'm looking for a position with nontraditional hours (5pm-midnight) something like that.
Question for you guys is, what jobs should I be searching for? Keywords, companies, etc...
Thanks.
Janitor?
I myself, am a master of the custodial arts. Or a janitor if you want to be a dick about it...
College was the wrong path dude. Should've got a job out of high school and save yourself a lot of money and stress.
x
Arent there some FX desks that would trade odd hours?
Additional Weekend/Night Job (Originally Posted: 10/30/2015)
Kinda of a random question for you guys. What's a good weekend or even night job to increasing your networking in a new big city, and of course make extra cash while working a full time corporate fin job.
Stripper? lulz
Lol, I felt that response was coming^
I've thought about maybe like working at a local whole foods or work at my local gym on the weekends.
Also, like there are lots of trade shows where I live. Maybe I could try and go do some consulting on the side. Y'all think that would be a good way to meet with start-up people who might need help
Thanks to those who took the post seriously, I have other priorities in the day time and an evening position would be ideal. What about dealing with foreign stock markets, that are open when ours is closed?
And to the person with the janitor comment, come on buddy don't belittle someone's job. The post clearly says "finance based jobs", don't be a prick about it.
Ideas for weekend job in nyc to cover unpaid internship costs (Originally Posted: 06/09/2010)
I am currently an intern at a small M&A shop in nyc that is unpaid, so I'm looking for a weekend job to help cover living costs here. It sucks but it's the experience that counts. Luckily they don't work weekends. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do?
i know uniqlo hires people all of the time because the managers are aholes and kids quit all of the time. - friend who worked there for two weeks last semester says
bartend
Do you have a driver license? You can drive a van and drop off and pickup strippers working at strip clubs. I hear the Benefits are pretty good.
Also.. are you an animal lover? You can work at a horse ranch in Westchester masturbating race horses, it pays well and makes the horses happy.
or you could just be a stripper yourself...
Tell those POS to pay you for your time.
Unpaid internship in M&A = they expect you to sell them drugs and candy ... maybe sex
Good luck getting a bartending job in NYC in this economy if you don't have somebody that can hook you up... especially if you're looking for a weekend gig.
Try to find a contact at a country club and caddy. Great money, all cash, and outside
sell ur body.................
Night Part Time Job Suggestions (Originally Posted: 06/02/2010)
I understand that this is highly unorthodox, but are there any suggestions or better yet openings available to interns that are willing to work during non-business hours (e.g. weekends, nights)? I am working at an unpaid organization over the summer and want to have a means for cash someway/somehow, but at the same time want to beef up my resume and learn something constructive. I was wondering if anyone knows of an opportunity/opportunities that allow for an intern come in post 4 PM, weekends, etc.? I understand this is highly unconventional, but it is worth a shot asking.
Thanks!
Something on an FX desk is all l can think of...
The internship should be the thing that;'s furthering your career, I doubt you're going to get an after-4pm job in an industry thatll make a difference on your resume. Go be a bartender and have some fun
Hotel front desk. It won't do jack for your resume though.
im in the same position. just applied to teach kaplan/princeton review prep classes. not exactly finance but itll improve your communication skills and they pay 15-25/hr. classes generally are at night and on weekends too
Jizz mopper. Conversation starter for the rest of your life...
hahaha jizz mopper
look into being a doorman... i have friends at school that used to do this (in nyc) and its not a bad gig. you can make 18/hour (i think its a union job), you can work at night, and while it might not be a resume booster, you can actually use it to network (most likely somebody will live in your building that might take a liking to you and might be willing to help you out... they know you are just doing the job for money and that its not a long term career path and so do your best to impress them with your door opening skills)
negatives include having to stand all night after you work all day
jizz mopper-- been there, done that. not good pay haha
how do you find a gig like that? being a doorman/ bellboy, etc.?
become a DJ. its not too hard these days.
Some businesses and accounting firms have after hours auditing jobs. I don't know what your background is but it might be worth looking into. The audits are typically conducted after normal business hours and would pay fairly well. It is more geared toward forensic accounting but you might be able to work something out.
Forensic accounting as a night part-time is a good choice.
i asked my friend... he said to be a doorman you either have to know someone, or, you can walk down park ave and ask the doorman at each building if the super is hiring for a summer fill in
YES there are night internships available.
When I was in school Merrill Lynch would get 1 or 2 students to be an IBD intern from 6pm - 12am for a few nights a week. I am sure they did shitty work, but they got good experience.
my friend is a doorman too. 20/hr and basically fills in when others are out, pretty sweet
also, telemarketing. i used to do it in high school and it was 11/hr and went from 5-10 weekdays... i was getting leads for sub-prime mortgage brokers (If i only knew at the time) in 05-06
some prop shops may have "night-shift" interns, trading asian markets or whatever, don't know...
it wouldn't be coming in at 4 pm anyway...late at night more likely...
^ right, right. my uncertainty was about whether there are interns on night shifts, not about whether there are night shifts to begin with. i think most prop shops have night activity. but i personally haven't heard of any night interns. on the other hand, that seems wholly possible and reasonable.
i know a few prop shops that ease you onto a night shift as an assistant or execution trader for an established trader after training. personally i'd prefer the night shift. i once gave up an offer from a shop that's considered top 10, maybe top 6 or 7 on wso...and though i was thoroughly unimpressed with the firm, i do regret giving up the chance to work nights - i know they would have put me on some kind of night shift for 6 - 12 months after training. that would have been sweet. then i could drink daiquiris - no, no, camparis - at 11 am and go play mini-golf. or golf. speaking of golf...
I saw a posting for a BO job once that was 9pm-9am three nights a week. PM if you're interested.
Part-time job possible after markets close? (Originally Posted: 01/09/2013)
Fraus and Gents,
I am soon to begin a foray into a prop trading career and I am oh so pumped. This is a great opportunity I feel, and though I realize the low success rate believe that I can somehow make it. That said, one of the specifics of my offer is that there is no salary or draw starting out.
Given that, and that I will have a very small book starting out, it will be several months before I see a meaningful paycheck. Do yall (especially those who work market hours, ahem trade4size and SirTradesaLot) think it is feasible to work a part-time job after the market close?
I was thinking working as a valet driver would be good because it gets me outside and away from a computer screen. Other options seem to be working as a night manager at a hotel or receptionist at a hospital. Anyone have any feedback on these jobs or ideas for working evenings/nights?
Bartend
at a gaybar
gay for pay huh... could be worth it, though not sure if i could look at myself in the mirror after grossing more by gay-tending than trading.
in all seriousness, i have considered bartending (and maybe waiting) but i didnt know if the training school was needed. any bartenders/former bartenders out there with any insight?
gay for pay =/= gay bartending
not sure why that popped into your head...
I think you're underestimating the time you'll need out of work to become good enough at your job to make consistent money, let alone how much rest you need. Tending bar is the last thing you'll want to do after a day of shadowing someone or trading.
goodbread nailed it
This is the kind of answer is was looking for. Thanks goodbread & mxc.
The plan anyway was to begin trading for a month or two and then think about the part-time job, but as you say hopefully I will be too engrossed in the markets.
I had a bit of a rough situation a few months ago and considered being a bottle girl.
Time-wise it would've worked out, but honestly like the guys above said, it's not just about the hours you spend at work. If you're doing this job for some kind of immigration status, then fine, but if you're actually trying to succeed there, it's going to take a lot of effort at home as well.
Just live farther away to get cheap rent... The hours you commute will be much less than hours spent bartending, and you could (in NYC) save up to a grand a month by living in Queens of Brooklyn.
Yeah, the bartending thing is hard, but I'm an extreme workaholic, or used to be. So hey, to each their own. You could also just do Friday night / weekends, that's what I've been doing for the last few months.
There are plenty of part time jobs though, all you really have to do is wander around your neighborhood asking local businesses if they need an extre person. A lot of them will also let you work for cash. If you're just looking for a few extra bucks on the side, don't be picky, there's plenty of people that need work done if you're willing to ask around.
Truthfully, you'd do best to go in with the attitude that for at least the first month, you're going to go all in. If after then you're obviously going to have a budget shortfall, THEN consider a part time job. It's kind of hard to put your best effort if you go into the situation looking to hedge your bets....yes?
For my sophomore internship I worked at a FX brokerage as a sales analyst. The place was open 24/7, and always had sales staff around the clock. The pay was meh, but the job was somewhat engaging.
