Excel test.. any advice?
I have an excel test next week for an Analyst role. This is more of a consultant type firm for an entry level role. They mentioned it is just a short excel test to test skills and some basic RE principle type stuff. Any idea what I can expect? Prior interview they asked me to tell me about NPV so I'm guessing one on that. Any help appreciated. I have never had to do one so also might be a stupid question, but I do come in wearing a suit?
I would wear a suit if they were wearing one at the first interview. I had one instance where the person I was interviewing told me to come in as comfortable as I wanted for he next round - series of tests, intelligence and psych evaluation.
If you have zero excel experience I would start learning now. I do not run NPV frequently in excel, I do remember there was an issue with it not calculating properly vs a financial calculator. Go to the formulas tab and try to see what you can familiarize yourself with under financial. Also, try and gain some experience with some of them logic items, IF, AND, OR, SUMIF, vlookup, hlookup and the stat functions.
He's right. But, it's easy an easy metric to include, i just do it out of habit.
Use XPNV to get the propert period 0 sum. Make sure you include a dynamic discount rate on the overview tab and dates to draw the xnpv function from.
Make sure your assumptions are clearly in a separate area, and try not to hardcode - try to refer to the assumptions.
Just make sure you can run a dcf and a debt table. Depending on how long the test is it would also be good to know how to run a waterfall.
Thanks guys.
I don't think it's going to be that complicated. It's mainly just an excel test with some RE questions tied to it. Does anyone have any examples of a straight Excel test? I am good with IFs, vlookups, Hlookups, pivots, SUMIFs, etc
Excel test - anyone have experience? (Originally Posted: 01/18/2017)
Anyone ever have to take one of these for interviews? What did it entail? Friend of mine is interviewing now for a couple firms and was notified he has to take one.
"excel test" .. classic, I guarantee that language came from HR
BNP tested one of my friends on a VBA but it wasn't an IBD role.
I had to do an "excel test" for a boutique. It was 95% extracting relevant numbers and putting them onto some PowerPoint template, which was fairly easy.

Hey,
I have an interview coming up at a real estate focused investment bank. I’ve already done a modeling test, but it will involve an excel test. Can you guys give me any info on what this would include?
Every excel test I have taken as part of a job interview has been really simple stuff. Without using a mouse they asked me to do a bunch of things like format different cells, print, and change print settings, set up a pivot table, take a data sheet and create a Vlookup, create charts and graphs adjusting to their different formatting and data requests.. It has never really never been very difficult especially if you already passed their modeling test. Most excel tests I have taken have been untimed and very straight forward. One caveat is that sometimes I would go to use a shortcut and the test wanted to see you do it the long way, and would mark me wrong, very frustrating.
