Exit opps - importance of IBD team

Hi monkeys,

I was wondering how your sector/geographical focus at GS/MS can impact exit opps.

For example: if you do your 2y stint in the UK team, will it limit exit opps for growth equity?

Same for TMT, will it limit exit opps to private equity funds with a diverse focus?

Or does it not matter if you’re coming from a top BB?

Thanks!

I'm just an intern so take my words lightly. From talking to analysts, I gathered that PE funds, especially megafunds, contact headhunters with a specific profile in mind, e.g. a man that speaks english and french and has had relevant deal experience within the healthcare industry. Headhunters are very biased towards GS/MS/JPM so they will look for this person in these banks first and then proceed to expand the research if they can't find enough candidates, thus I believe that industry team is quite important as it gives you the deal experience part of the research and being at a BB is important since you are being screened before other candidates.

From what I understand, it's mostly a shitshow as with IB recruiting, so if you can do something to make yourself more appealing, do it

this almost looks it is pasted from this: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/20-most-frequently-asked-questio…

Generally true, but this applies mostly to niche teams (PUI, FIG, RE and to some extent HC) but not for C&R, TMT, Industrials roles in PE funds, these could attract people from any backgrounds as these industries are not difficult to model and understand (often times basic supply and demand with volume/mix drivers in some shape or form).

UK teams are generalist and thus so long you can say why you want to do X or Y you'll be fine. TMT is still quite broad and you should not be limited to TMT PE or GE.

lol, add JPM to that top BB list - yeah I am salty and an incoming JPM

Most teams at GS / MS are top. But if you get placed in a top team at other BB's  (e.g. CS Sponsors), you will stand an equally good chance

A bit late to the party, but I can add my insights. For the most part, it does matter. Friend at a BB's FIG team is getting calls only from FIG MF PE teams. Another guy worked in the geography team (UK/BeNeLux/Nordics) of an EB (LAZ/EVR/PWP level) and landed at an UMM in their geography team. Hell, even I got contacted by a MF for their HC team because my focus is HC strategy (totally bombed technical, but that's another story). Bottom line is that your exits are not stifled much as part as prestige goes, but they may be as far as teams go.
