Exit Ops From Oil & Gas PE
Lot of folks quietly thinking about this right now so I'll get the discussion going. Currently at an O&G PE firm and industry outlook couldn't be more grim for someone in their late 20s. What are some realistic pivot options from O&G PE. Infra? generalist PE? Have to go to b school?
Infra is an easy pivot. Tons of new $ being raised in the space and they’re going to need bodies. Obviously much better than O&G from a long term industry health perspective but I’d imagine you’re going to see more folks creep up the risk curve (or look at non traditional investments with a traditional infra risk profile a la KKR)
Transitioning to generalist PE is also doable but you’re going to need to be proactive with networking and messaging to recruiters. It of course matters what verticals you’re focused on but be sure to master the deal process that’s common to all PE and spending some time thinking about how non O&G companies work. Maybe pick up a strategy book like Competition Demystified. B School also helps.
