Semi-auto or super-auto?  There's a whole can of worms here but your Starbucks shot is at best a 6/10.  A super can maybe push 8, and a real semi will go all the way.

I’ve dropped $1,200 on a fully automatic espresso machine (it grinds the beans and makes it). It was a Jura. It worked great for a few years, but was a pain to clean.

Now I just have a $60 simple espresso machine and buy ground beans. I’m happy with just a simple machine now though. I don’t drink espresso plain, I put dark chocolate almond milk in it.

But, for drinking plain espresso, the Jura gave great head and it made one hell of a fresh ground tasting shot of espresso. The allure of just pressing a button and having a drink is nice.

I got a Saeco Incanto Deluxe from Seattle Coffee Gear in 2012.  It was around a grand new but the used price was $400.  It was really nice and after 4000 shots (it counts) I think I got my money's worth. Great head and very worth it.  The old lead ETF PM thinks you need to go semi, but the italian guy who designed our craziest equity ETF disagrees.

Have a Delonghi Dinamica. Automatic that grinds beans fresh. Def good espresso but had much better. Use it in a pinch when i need a quick caffeine boost, but haven't used it in close to a month.

Bought an Hario V60 system pour over coffee and get good beans/hand grind them fresh. Best cup of coffee I've ever had. Oddly soothing in the morning too to make your own coffee like that.

It is a semi-auto, but I have a Breville Barista Express (BES870XL) and couldn't recommend it enough. It's a good balance between convenience with the built-in grinder and quality. Good amount of adjustments you can make between grind fineness, temp, shot length (if you want), and probably some other stuff I am missing. Got it for like $450ish pre-covid, but somehow they are getting away charging $600 for it now.

Seconding the barista express. I’ve had mine for over 6 years now and it works like the day I bought it. Every person I’ve lived with has bought one after moving out because they were such a big fan of it.

I bought a Nespresso machine and use it daily for espresso. No complaints on my end. Would recommend.

It’s not real espresso and is actually a bit weaker. I prefer traditional espresso which has more of a kick to it.

”Espresso machines produce between 375mg and 520 mg of caffeine per 225ml.

Nespresso:

Original capsules contain between 50mg and 120mg, Vertuo capsules range from 70mg to 150 mg of caffeine for Espresso and Gran Lungo pours, and between 170mg and 200 mg per cup for Mug and Alto coffee sizes.”
