Experienced Hire - How Long to Hear Back?

Hey folks -

Currently at a BB and have interviewed with another BB last week (mo/bo role) to lateral hire as an associate. It has been almost a week and I have not heard back yet. Typically, what is a reasonable time frame for me to follow up with HR? Better question, typically how long does it take for HR to reach back with a decision for an experienced hire?

Would appreciate the insight from folks who have went through experienced hire recruiting.

It depends on a number of factors: how critical the need is, how many candidates they still have to interview, whether the role is in flux. Not hearing back for a week and then contacting your recruiting contact to reaffirm interest is fine. They'll usually respond to those types of e-mails with something. I guess a lack of response to a direct inquiry would also tell you something but I've never had that happen where I just got ghosted by a recruiter.

  1. Do recruiters tend to keep you pending for a while or do they inform you directly (timely manner) that they no longer have interest in hiring you?

  2. In my particular situation, my contact at the bank (senior MD), passed my resume to the head of the team that was hiring. How much leverage do I have in this scenario? Despite me doing well in all the interviews, what are the chances that the team could turn me down even with a referral from my MD contact? Do not mean to portray this as if I am privileged to be given the job with this connection, but trying to be realistic in this whole game of politics.

Most companies will let you know pretty quickly if the match isn't there (within about a week or two): some will do it personally and others may let you know via an automated rejection e-mail that can end up in your spam. Some might not follow-up because the recruiter is too chicken shit to tell you. In your case I would assume "no news" isn't "bad news".

A BB should be honest with you if you're still in consideration but they haven't been able to make a decision yet, especially since you were a referral from a Senior MD.

Unless you're directly descended from this Senior MD, all the referral did was get you in the door. Even then, it won't guarantee you a role you want but may guarantee you some bullshit role in some back office function. Sure, it's one more person to speak up and say you're great but it doesn't guarantee you a job. This isn't a small, family business so they need to make sure that all their hiring practices are above board. Hopefully HR will at least send you something in response to a polite inquiry so you can have a better idea of where things stand. Good luck!

 

I reached out to HR after 2 weeks of not hearing back and they said I am still in good standing with good feedback on my interviews. Looks like they are still in the midst of interviewing, but its almost approaching the 3rd week.

Questions..

  1. Does experienced hire recruiting process typically take this long?

  2. Would it be inappropriate to email the manager of the team directly that I interviewed with asking for further updates?
