Take a break and go outside, massage your eyes, then return and watch porn.
it affects some people worse than others. I've looked at tiny text on a computer for half a day straight without any problems. But for people like you they make special computer monitor filters (forgot what they're called- they look like a black screen) that is supposed to help.
Look at something far away, usually out a window. The change from focusing on something up close to far away will help break the strain
Make sure you're reading in good light and don't sit so close to the monitor. That's all, really.
http://www.gunnars.com/products/ You could get those although I think most people would laugh at you. Honestly you should see an optometrist or ophthalmologist, sounds like you have need an Rx for glasses.

Apparently, shorttheworld has some co-workers who wear them on the trading floor and love them. I'm looking to get a pair for myself soon because the eye strain I get is beyond a nuisance.
If turning the screen brightness down doesn't help; then sometimes I'll wear sunglasses while working on the computer to lessen the strain on my eyes.

How do you stop your hand getting fucked up when they are attached to the arrow keys on your keyboard for ten hours a day -i.e. living in Excel?
Design it's more likely that you are in need of just a simple pair of glasses. Clarkey, you take breaks or get a USB numerical keyboard.
I just try not to be a bitch
What... how did you people throw monkey shit at this.. I enjoyed it! +1
Privacy screens are sold at every office supplies store. Very useful because the contents of your monitor are only viewable if looked at head-on. When you hear a senior banker approaching your desk, you have extra time to Alt+Tab back to Excel because he first sees your screen from an angle.
Go to a good optical shop, don't go to a chain, even a high end one and prepare to pay. Good designer frames will start at 200 i.e. Lacoste's Titanium ones, assuming you have a simple Rx the lenses should be cheap, get the scratch resistant coating, the anti-glare one smudges. Glass is best, it's more difficult to scratch than polycarbonate, but it can shatter. Also, glass is heavier.
Dry eyes are the common cause of this. I just visited a specialist last week and the quick remedy is an eye drops that's for temporary tears.
It lubricates your eyes.
Change the settings of your computer so the background of everything is grey. It is much easier on your eyes staring at a grey background all day in excel then a white one.
I've been searching for this for a while. Any idea how to do it?
Right click on your desktop background then go into display settings and change the background color from white to grey. I forget what the exact steps are, and I have a different operating system on my laptop so I can't check because it's not the same, but it's pretty intuitive once you right click on the desktop background (knowing to right click the desktop background is the only tricky part).
Been wondering the same thing. Have had perfect vision most of my life, now after a few years of working I can still see fine at close range but at a distance things have gotten blurry. I can hardly tell what time it says on my DVR.
As far as preventative measures are concerned, the only thing I've see some people do is change the default background color in excel and word from white to grey. I think it looks stupid, but supposedly its easier on the eyes.
Yeah, I've noticed my eyes getting much worse much faster over time too. I've been trying to get up every now and then and chilling at a window for a couple moments, but it's hard because you don't want people to think you're slacking.

It is called Eyes Relax.
It says "forces" but really a thing pops up every 13 min (can be changed) and does a 1 minute count down. It wastes an hour a day. It is eye opening how long you stare at a computer without considering looking up.
Since I have started the excel stuff for 10+ hours a day my vision has slowly gone down hill (past 2 years). Eye doc said it is because my eyes are used to just one distance away (eye to screen) and "forget" how to focus at varying distances.
The strain was getting to be an everyday thing that I was taking Ibuprofen for. I've been using this program for 2 days and it has made a huge difference.
On a similar note - does anyone use computer glasses? Do they even work?
Wait...don't people use porn for eye strain?
Change the white background fields (excel, word, etc) on your computer to grey in your display settings and be sure to take breaks and walk around a bit every couple hours. Done
What are computer glasses
How bad has your eyesight gotten after joining banking? (Originally Posted: 02/04/2013)
I joined my bank last summer and the hours sitting in front of a computer, looking at microscopic numbers in models, is taking a toll on my eyes. My vision seems to be getting blurrier as time goes on.Anyone else in the same boat as me?
30/30 rule - rest your eyes for 30 seconds every 30 minutes.
During my SA stint this was literally what i lived by. I couldnt see straight after looking at the comp for 2 hrs straight when i would try and text message id be like fml i frgt to look away...
I wear Gunnars. Only a matter of time before all the banks start buying everyone a pair. http://www.gunnars.com/index2/

Wow do these actually work? Is there any evidence?
Siting in front of multiple computer screens for 10+ hours a day for the past 4 years has killed my eyes. I feel them getting worse as the days go on
There's pretty much no way to avoid it....I cant tell I'm going to have to up my prescription soon.
I have downloaded f.lux on my laptop. Not sure how much good it does but it's supposed to filter your screen when the sun is setting/down to simulate a more natural light in comparison to the default brightness. During the day my screen is set to 6500K (supposed to simulate daylight) and at night it's 3400K (supposed to simulate a halogen light).
I imagine Gunnars serve a similar purpose.
Might look into the gunnars as long as they don't look ridiculous on me. I dont think the 30 second rule will help much. For now, I am trying to avoid the computer as much as possible. I am printing out due diligence and industry reports so i dont have to read them online.
I've heard of people getting computer glasses before, basically prescription reading glasses set for the distance between your face and the screen, rather than your face and a book.
I think the yellow tint works better for people in creative type jobs. Also, now I'm laughing thinking about an army of analysts with computer glasses and carpal tunnel wrist guards. So much for sexy finance.
I'd definitely like to hear more about these Gunnars if anyone else has tried them out. They're expensive but it's not like I can buy another pair of eyes I suppose...
Eyes... (Originally Posted: 07/10/2008)
After working long hours, I find that it is my eyes more so than myself/body that is actually tired. They get dry... feeling like closing and are overall uncomfortable. It's worse on longer hours and pretty bad after waking up from a night of ~2-3 hours of sleep.
Do any of you recommend any specific kind of eye drops or eye creams?
p.s. - please don't recommend visine...
theratears has gel drops that work pretty good.
.
I remember when I first started how my eyes hurt at the end of each day. Might not help with you but I recommend to everybody is to turn down the brightness of your screen to the minimum that is still comfortable to look at. It makes a massive difference, trust me.
This worked for me too. My optometrist also suggested that I remember to blink several times per minute when I'm staring at the screen for so long. It keeps your eyes moist and gives them a tiny break.
I like Thera Tears. They come in individual packets that have a few drops each = more sterile.
rohtos are incredible. not only are they a pothead's choice due to the excellent redness relief, they are also the most prestigious eye drops due to their high price (8 bucks for .4fl oz)
start with the green ones and once you can handle the intensity, work your way up to Arctic... your eyes will thank you.
Sistane
its actually spelled systane
Buy some eye ointment. It seems gross to put what is essentially vaseline in your eyes - but if you do it at night you'll feel a dramatic difference in just a few days.

I have very dry eyes, and being in front of a screen 16 hours a day does not help. I've tried a ton of brands, but nothing ever gave me relief beyond a few minutes.
I finally found "Refresh Plus" eyedrops. The key is that they don't have any preservatives (most commercial drops do) that actually dry your eyes out more. They come in a box with about 30 little vials, which have about 6 drops in each - usually enough to get me through a day.
Also, be careful about those redness reducing drops - the vasoconstrictors in them can actually make the blood vessels in your eyes loose if you use the drops often, meaning eventually your eyes will be permanently redder all the time, and the drops will lose their effectiveness.
