F100 Corporate Strategy to PE possible?
Hey everyone! Thought I'd post to hopefully get your thoughts, thanks in advance.
Graduated undergrad 2017. Joined F100 Insurance Company. Worked first year as a financial analyst and then transitioned to corporate strategy within the company. Is it realistic to get into PE from here? Pre-MBA or even Post-MBA?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Not very - you don't really have any of the skillsets useful to a PE firm. No transaction experience, the financial skills you do have aren't PE-oriented (modeling etc.), and you're going up against very stiff competition from top banks and consulting firms.
It's not impossible, but you'd likely have to get an MBA at a good school, do 1-2 years as an associate at either a strong consulting firm or bank, and then join a start-up/younger fund who is more flexible in terms of who they hire. This is around 6-8 years of work for a specific career goal, so you should make sure this is something you truly desire and not something you're idly flirting with.
Looking at your post history, you seem dissatisfied with your current F100 role and are looking for something more challenging. This happened to more than a few of my good friends out of college, and most of them eventually found careers that were more to their liking. Best of luck out there.
Great points, and pretty spot on. 1) Definitely want more of a challenge so naturally thought of the traditional fields of consulting, ibanking, and private equity as where I want to go. But agreed, have to make sure that is actually what I want
Current game plan is stay here for 2 more years, MBA business schools">M7 business school, then ideally MBB for 2-3 years. Do you think if that route actually ended up happening PE could be a possibility?
It's possible but would definitely be an uphill climb and luck might have to get involved to some degree. The challenge is that most places looking for a post-MBA associate want someone who had PE experience pre-MBA...so recruiting is a bit circular in that regards which makes breaking into PE after b-school challenging, even with MBB as a stepping stone.
That said, it's definitely possible...you'd probably have to network hard and find a smaller shop that has a track record of looking to consulting firms for their pipeline and / or is willing to take a chance on you.
