Fake ID's as a Summer Analyst - To be or no to be?

Fake ID’s - as a Summer Analyst should you do it or not?

We’ve all been here before. As a Sophomore working in IBD I did it last summer and got away with it - here's what to do and what not to do.

Full disclosure: I am not a heavy party/drinker I specifically bought my fake so that I could further bond with my group outside the office; although I was turning 21 a few short months after the internship ended.

Here’s how to get away with it:

HAVE PRACTICE USING IT! - Don’t wait till week 1 for it to be the first time you use the damn thing, use it before for Christ’s sake.
Know what you want to order beforehand: just be safe and choose either the drink your assoc or analyst is drinking, don’t fumble around with the menu. It just looks bad.

If anyone asks: my advice is not to tell. If it’s a Thursday and your group is going out to drink, don’t mention that you have a fake.
Stick with your story the whole time, if you say you’re 21 in the beginning, stick with it. Don’t say you’re 19 & accept the invitation to the bar and have those eyebrows be raised at you 2 beers in.

Drinking tips: Needless to say when you’re with the team there’s no need to get plastered (ESP IF YOU HAVE A FAKE)

But play it by ear - if your group is more laid back then you can let the reigns loose, but if you’re still feeling it out just be chill, 1 or 2 beers max.

Of course, if you're 19 /20 try your best not come in the office hungover, in my opinion, it just looks really bad if you're slow and sluggish the next morning. That's why you need to limit your intake, especially with a fake ID.

It’s a great experience working in NYC, SF, LA and for a lot of you monkeys, it’s your first time in a city like this. Having a fake opens a whole world to experience but do it smart.

What are your thoughts? Should Summers have fakes? Should they tell their Analysts/ Assocs? What are your reactions when / if a Summer has told you they have a fake?

Horrible advice. Stupid thread.

Such an unnecessary risk that can cost you your reputation and/or offer letter if spotted with a fake ID in front of your office squad.

Also - They KNOW your age. That can put the firm at major risk if they know you're underage and something were to happen. How stupid could you possibly be?

What's next? Advice on how to smoke pot in the office?

Felt the need to comment on this thread, I normally stay away but you are giving truly awful advice.

As others have pointed out, this is terrible advice. A few things:

1) the firms know how old you are 2) the firms are very aware of the risks associated with underage drinking and are concerned about making sure that they do not cross any lines or promote (or allow) this behavior 3) you are putting your coworkers in a bad position, you aren’t “bonding” with them, you are placing them in a risky situation that can get them fired, I don’t think you are fully grasping the reality here, these “co-workers” are the managers in this situation and are responsible for you 4) you are entering a “grown up” environment, as much as people understand that underage drinking happens in college, these are adults, with responsibility, and different legal ramifications, it is very different than college, this is a professional setting, no one will care that you can’t drink because of your age but people will care if you lie, or put them in a bad situation 5) your co-workers also have to be concerned about the appearance (or real) favoritism. At the end of the day an internship is part experience, part job interview and any appearance of favoritism can be an issue.

Look, I understand that the above sounds overly burdensome and cautious. There are firms that won’t care, there are places that might be ok with this, but it basically has no upside. The adults will understand that you can’t drink and still be cool with you.

Ya, this is terrible advice.

It’s better if you just don’t mention your age period because analysts/associates a) don’t care and b) want plausible deniability if you’re underage and get caught. If there’s any organized events at bars/restaurants/etc, you will not be ID’ed so don’t draw attention to yourself for no reason. If you’re going out with the group in a more informal setting then you’ll have to figure that one out but just be smart about it (i.e. don’t get caught with a fake, say something stupid because you can’t handle your liquor).

Would it be better to just not drink alcohol at organized events and not go out with the group because you're underage or is it better to just use the fake carefully.

Also my fake isn't very good so I'd have to get a new one
