Family business

Hi All,

I'm curious to learn your views on an issue which is quite central to my life : Working in the family business

What would your advice be to someone whose parents have their own businesses : Many people tell me that I should not get a job but make my career in the family business. These are decent size operations 75 and 30 people respectively ( not Mom & Pop shops )

I'm a little aprehensive because of the question " What will happen if I dont like it " - I would have lost time. I like the idea though.

What would you do if your parents had their different organisations - would you work with them or not?

This is an issue I think about all the time
Thanks alot
Best

Seems like a great opportunity - be your own boss, keep the business (and profits) within the family, etc. But it's also not a bad idea to work for a few years in another company before joining the business. I know a couple of people who've done this to increase their network in the industry and also understand how other places do things.

This question is kind of ridiculous. You've had your entire life to decide whether or not you think the business is interesting. Did you spend anytime at the company as a kid, while in high school, as a college student? Is the business profitable? Do your parents generally seem happy running the business?

People are constantly reinventing themselves. You could fck around with the business for the next 10 years and then decide you want to try something entirely different. "Wasting time" is a relative and asinine concept, youre never wasting time if you are trying new things, making mistakes, learning, etc.

My family owns a business as well but I decided that I would prefer to build something on my own and do my own thing. It is a nice safety net to have thought. Again this is a personal decision best of luck to you
