Tips for passing the SIE

All,

Just wanted to see if those if you who have recently taken and passed the SIE exam might have any sage advice. I am going to be taking the exam within the next few months, and would like to know if you guys might have any tips on the exam itself, studying, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Um... don't be an idiot, and read the material?

Seriously, it is the minimum competency exam of minimum competency exams.

It's designed for marketing and IT people and the like. If you can't pass it this might not be the career for you.

Disclaimer: I was grandfathered in, and never took it, but as a CFA Charterholder I took an entire two weeks after being hired to knock the 7 and 63 out of the park to get a raise.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Never said that I couldn't pass it or that I had doubts about passing it, but it's in my nature to talk to as many people about something that I want to be prepared for, which is why I started this discussion.

This is really unhelpful and also just wrong too- its clear you haven't taken the test. Obviously the SIE is not hard- its not the CFA- but most people are not born immediately knowing what a FINRA form U4 and U5 are- plus all of the regulations related to Municipal securities and business conduct laws- they are completely random/arbitrary at times and need to be committed to memory- there's no other way about it and it requires time (not much but some).

Why even post such an ignorant thing when the guy is just trying to get some advice...

Study for it right now bro. I wanted to take it on a Saturday and the only one that was open near me was the 20th. I started studying 2 days ago lol.

I got the Knopman textbook from my roommate and will be reading through the whole thing. Only resource I'm using.

Took me 4 weeks of studying and passed confidently. My tip would be to take the practice exam on the finra’s website because the questions on the practice exam/ actually exam are worded differently than how the practice programs construct theirs.

A few years ago I passed multiple exams.... take the time and just do a bunch of practice questions. If you have a decent memory then the repetition will serve you well. I can’t speak for the SIE, but the 7 and subsequent exams didn’t have many conceptual aspects other than basic option strategies, most of it was straight memorization.

Passed each of the exams I took on the first try, and with scores of 90%+. I know that nowadays it is pass / fail, but just figured I would justify my response. PM me if you have any specific questions!
