Best Steakhouse in NYC besides Peter Lugars

I always go to Peter Lugars for any special occasion but this time I feel I need to try something different. Perhaps something right in Manhattan.

What do you guys think of a place like Mark Josephs or Sparks? Any other suggestions...and yes, only steakhouses.

trade, is that ashok varadhan?! lucky you to get to work under him! but he's hindu, so i doubt he would eat steak haha.....

Almost positive that its this British dude that works at UBS. He spoke to my SA class one time and told all of us that if anyone made MD before 28 he would take you out for a steak and drinks.

Sparks is solid, crowd is wayyyy old though. Our group was getting a little rowdy and we were getting some dirty looks, even though we were in one of the rooms off to the side.

Old Homestead is suprisingly better than you would expect - the one in AC is actually better though. Best vibe out of all of them.

Smith & Wollensky is overrated beyond belief.

Strip House has to be my favorite, goose fat potatoes are out of this world.

I 2nd strip House. Bobby Vans is pretty solid too.

Ben and Jacks is pretty damn good...It was started by two waiters at PL, some people actually prefer it. Capital Grille is a pretty good spot as well. Wolfgang's and Smith and Wollensky are way too overrated, I wouldn't drop $50 on a steak at either of those places.

Check out Ben and Jacks, just went to their new location on 28th and 5th the other night.

Strip House is awesome, and Keen's is old-school cool (though I'm partial to the mutton chop over the steaks, but the steaks are damn good). I'm not a fan of Del Frisco.

28-year old MD could also be a guy at Jefferies who runs high yield capital markets - Brian something.

Quality Meats was created by the smith and wollensky group as a less white table cloth steak house with just as good of food. They have great steaks, apps, the seafood platters, their own beer and homemade ice cream.

I have to say that Keens is atrocious, Strip House is very good, Peter Lugers and Smith and Wollensky are over rated.

I grew up in NY, so I can say with confidence Sparks, Smith & Wollensky and Ban & Jacks (has the same meat supplier as lugers, amazing steak sauce)... As for sparks, it is the only one that wet ages the meat as opposed to everyone who dry ages... gives it a different taste... Rothman's makes a descent steak as well, across the street from Jeffries...

[quote=MezzKet]this place is also man heaven, its a french concept but ridiculously good!

The original Relais de Venise is two blocks from my house here in Paris. No menu, because they only serve one thing. You get a salad with bread, and then they bring on the steak and fries with their special sauce until you can't take any more.

I think it's the oldest steakhouse in Paris.

just got back from there... love the place... the one in saint germain? near deux magots?

As a former commodities trader that dabbled in cattle from time to time, let me warn you that they often try to pass off corn finished beef as grass fed.

What this means is that the cow was raised on grass until it went to a finishing yard where it was force fed corn, steroids, and antibiotics before making its way to your dinner table.

If you're wanting to enjoy truly superlative beef, insist on grass-fed, grass-finished beef. Trust me, you can taste the difference.

Smith and Wolensky is terrible. Strip house, Capital Grille, and Sparks are all excellent. If you go to Sparks ask for the room in the back, through the kitchen. There's a back door in case any shit pops off.

keeps me going back to peter's! it cannot be beat and prime in the palms in vegas may be the best steak ive ever had plus i got to watch pete rose flip out alongside his asian "girlfriend" because he had clearly bet heavy on the AFC wildcard game last year

Big fan of Sparks. I've been to the Capital Grille in NYC twice, and while I like the food there, the service was very slow (had much better service in their Boston and DC locations).

This is driving me crazy. first of all, it's spelled LUGERS. not lugars, LUGERS. learn it.

Second of all, both the lugers in brooklyn, and the lugers in great neck absolutely shit on any steak house in the world. both of them. if you have been to Wolfgangs (Curry Hill), it wishes it was lugers. sparks is great in its own right, as are (to a lesser extent) bobby vans, strip house, blt, etc. Ruth's Chris and Mortons are chains-- they're a joke, please, stop with this madness. For good Italian do you go to the olive garden? How about the overpriced olive garden? Yeah, exactly.

For the legit steakhouse experience, go to Lugers with some who knows that no real carnivore uses a menu. Order up a feast of bacon (massive fucking pieces, each person only gets one), shrimp cocktail, tomato and onion, massive piece of dead cow, creamed spinach, home fries, whateva whateva, some dessert action, and a couple of brews to wash it all down.

Get at me

I haven't been to many in NYC, so I can't comment on comparisons to the places mentioned, but I thought the steaks at Primehouse were pretty phenomenal. Feel free to critique.

New York Steakhouses are distinct in many ways both in terms of their atmospheric offerings, diversity in their menu offerings, who their meat supplier is to the manner and style of presentation of their steak. As a born and bred New Yorker who cooks a great deal at home and who grew up in a family of culinary artisans, there are certain types of meals that I have always preferred to have out and those are Steak Dinners. There is no doubt that preparing Strassburger Meats (supplier to many of New York City's Premier Steakhouses) on my brother's fancy luxury grill in his home outside of Manhattan is great. But even so, I really just enjoy the whole process of eating and drinking from cocktails and appetizers through to the main course at a top New York Steakhouse. Several places in my estimation stand out for their distinctive character and quality of their food, the atmosphere in which that food is consumed and how impeccable is their customer service. Included in that list is Sparks, Peter Lugers, Smith & Wollensky, Smith & Wollensky Grill, Ben & Jacks, Quality Meats, Maloney & Porcelli, Morton's, Delmonico's and The Palm (particularly in East Hampton). A relatively new entrant for me is Parlor Steakhouse on the Upper East Side. Some of my best meals and memories have been enjoying steak dinners in this town. I think more steakhouses like the Palm do themselves a disservice by not having a larger bar scene as well. I really do think that they are many reasons to try all of the ones I have mentioned. Loving one does not mean you have to hate another. New York is blessed by the quality of its steakhouses. And before you get angry about steak pricing, prices have risen as a function of rising Prime prices around the world. The Top Steakhouses rely too much on repeat business to gouge their customers.. They are simply dealing with the economic reality in the world. Prime Steak of the kind prepared at a place like Wollensky costs the steakhouse and the meat company a great deal to obtain and deliver. Nevertheless, I think a steak dinner in NYC is one of the greatest values for a luxury meal, one that never grows old.

Wolfgang is pretty famous..

i went to empire steak (36 W. 52nd St.) for restaurant week dinner recently...food tastes great and the portion is huge for the typical restaurant week prefix. would recommend that as well.

del frisco's is really good...great steaks and the sides are awesome too. The bill can easily come to about $100 per person if you splurge, but I think that's about standard for a nyc steakhouse.

21 Club must be included in this discussion as one of the top steakhouses in NYC.

May I also suggest buying a bottle of 1982 Chateau Cheval Blanc or 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild. These wines are by far the absolute best wine you will ever have.

^^ Isn't the Porterhouse the only cut they serve? Or do they have other ones now?

I've only been to the Great Neck location.

Anyway, I didn't know there was a Del Frisco's in NYC now, that place is unbelievable. I went to the one in Denver.

Other favorites: -Smith & Wollensky -Burton & Doyle (Great Neck) -Bobby Van's

Luger's is the spot. A lot of people think they look cool when they say that Luger's is overrated; in fact, they just look like they have no idea what they're talking about. Tips:

I'm assuming that if you're going this weekend you have a reservation. If you don't, you shouldn't bother trying.

Luger's is cash only (I've heard that they're now willing to take debit cards, but I've never tried it)

The steak for two is the best cut. If you have a bunch of people, get multiple steaks for two rather than going for the steaks for three or four.

And, most importantly, you must get the bacon. The bacon is fucking amazing. It will change the way you think about bacon forever.

mba007:
Ben & Jacks in the east 40s is good

Agree, Ben and Jack's is started by ex Luger guys and has MUCH better service and equal food.

-------------- Either you sling crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot

'A lot of people think they look cool when they say that Luger's is overrated;'

Well I think it's overrated. Been a few times, it's good but not good enough to justify the hike to brooklyn.

and i grew up in nyc too man.

Another vote for Luger's, and the Bacon. I wish I knew where they get that bacon. It is simply the most amazing thing I've ever had.

Spark's is also great, as is Strip House and Wolfgang's. Bobby Van's sucks.
