Favorite Sports Moment

Similar to this forum post regarding whether or not we will see another sports year like 2016-17, I was wondering what is the single greatest game/match you have watched in all sports and why is it the greatest in your opinion?

For me, in person had to be my college basketball team beating the number one ranked team at the time on a buzzer beater. (Cal v. Arizona), and on tv, it had to be the first time my favorite baseball time won the World Series after a 56 year drought (SF Giants 2010).

Would love to hear yours.

I loved that moment, but I would personally place the 2014 World Cup semifinal above. GER vs BRA, 7 - 1, never forget.

Houston Rockets 2015 2nd round of playoffs game 6 comeback over the Clippers on their court. The headband brothers (Jason Terry, Corey Brewer, and Josh Smith. Mainly the last 2) lead a 49-18 run over the final 14:30 of the game to turn a 19 point deficit into a 12 point victory, all with MVP runner-up James Harden on the bench. The Rockets would go on to win game 7 to complete the 3-1 comeback. Below is an article outlining the ridiculousness of this run. As a Rockets fan this game will forever stick with me, I think I cried a little when Josh Smith brought the ball up the floor and hit a pull up 3 to give us the lead.

IDK but I just wanted to say that I came home drunk over the weekend and saw this thread and then I stayed up til like 4 AM watching Youtube highlight reels of the best sports moments in the 2000s. 10/10 would recommend

Indiana upsets No. 1 Kentucky at the buzzer

Down by two with just over five seconds left, Christian Watford made the biggest shot of his life and was subsequently mobbed by teammates.

"Truth is like poetry. And most people fucking hate poetry."

Things i saw live, in no order: -Seahawks hanging the championship banner in 2014 -Tiger in his prime (2005), Shanghai open -Mariners beating the Yankees ALDS game 5, still kind of a big deal here since we haven't won much -being in Buenos Aires & Rio for the 2014 world cup -seeing Messi a few times -Sweden v Norway Olympic hockey game

  • Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, both times, but the first one was special

  • GB Cycling at 2016 Olympics. Namely the successes of Laura Trott (now Laura Kenny), Jason Kenny and Wiggins

Just two off the top of the head from recent years. Jonny Wilkinson scoring his drop goal at 2003 Rugby World Cup Final is also up there, though I didn't get to fully appreciate that being 9 y.o. at the time.

Wimbledon 2008 Men's Final (Nadal d. Federer)

Euro 2012 Soccer Final (nobody does that to Italy)

Game 5 NBA Finals (Bulls vs Jazz, Jordan with the flu)

Spud Webb wins 1986 slam dunk contest

I'm obviously biased here as an LP fan but:

The Miracle of Istanbul 2005: Liverpool vs Milan in CHL finale

Liverpool behind by 3 in the second half pulling it together and manages to come back in only 6 minutes! The match goes into overtime and ends in a killer penalty shooutout. So crazy.

Watching it today still gives me the chill.

A couple that come to mind:

2008 Wimbeldon Final Nadal v Federer. The end was played in darkness. The best tennis match I've ever seen in my life.

2006 Carolina Hurricanes vs Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup. Year after lockout the intensity and heart of every game in this 7 game series has not been since replicated in the NHL.

November 2004 Pacers and Pistons Brawl at the Palace. The first time I saw debauchery enter a sports arena.

The man had so many moments like this that it's hard to pick just one, but this one was just incredible. As clutch as one can be. Forcing the playoff on the 72nd hole of the '08 US Open two months after ACL surgery and with a fractured tibia. This basically represents Tiger's swansong and the end of his dominance, but what a way to cap it off. Say what you want about the dude, but he produced moments like this nonstop for a decade.

So many more but that's what I can think of.

This was obviously not a World Series or such but seeing Derek Jeter's last home game at Yankee Stadium was an incredible experience.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

As a Laker Fan. Kobe's last game was the best game I have ever seen. Keep in mind I have seen plenty of championship games that my favorite teams have participated in and won. But, the tension and anticipation for those individual games only lasted for a couple days leading up to it and a couple days after it. I have also seen a lot of great performances/great games that just happened randomly, but there was no lead up to those moments and the amazingness fizzled within a couple of days.

For those that weren't following the Lakers or weren't Laker/Kobe fans (or are haters) I don't know what the game felt like to you. From my perspective though (a Laker fan), this game was a follow up to Kobe's last game as being Kobe, known as the Achilles game in 4/12/2013 against Golden State. I recommend those of you who like basketball to watch this game, if you want to get a good idea of Kobe's mindset. FYI curry scored 47 and Thompson scored 25.

As most of you guys know and are happy about, Lakers have sucked since then. The media and Laker haters always love talking about it and putting all the blame on Kobe. Come 11/29/2015 Kobe announces he is going to retire at the end of the season. Since the Lakers at that point were clearly not going to make the playoffs everyone knew his last game would be 4/13/2016 against Utah. Three years of tension were building on that game. The whole NBA season from a Lakers point of view was on that one game, with expectations being super high.

It is one thing to have a great game or win a championship and then announce your retirement, but it is another to announce your retirement 5 months in advance and have to live with the results. The 5 months leading up to the game Kobe was battered and was throwing up shots for the fans. The Laker haters were salivating and rooting for Kobe's last game to be a disaster. Laker fans just wanted to get a W for Kobe. I don't want to ruin the game for those of you who haven't seen it, but if you are a fan of Basketball, you should watch this game if you are a Kobe hater stay away from it. FYI the Golden State game that broke the record for most wins in a season was playing at the same time.

In short the 3 years leading up to the game I felt nothing but disappointment toward the Lakers. The 5 months leading up to it, I felt a mix of emotions, sadness and pent up aggression was overflowing. Pre-game and During the game I was super nervous/excited until the buzzer. After the game I never felt that much joy for a sporting event (even after winning a championship) and that feeling opens anytime I watch a Laker game. Kobe's last game made the three years prior to that worth it, and makes watching this current crappy Laker squad in 2017 bearable.

What are your guys thoughts?

Favorite moment - VY running in the TD to win the national championship over USC... Those two teams were SO stacked! I think it was the only time there were the top 3 Heisman finalists playing in a national championship game.

in person - the Memorial Day Miracle - Sean Elliott hitting the 3 in the corner with his heels over the out of bounds line to win game 2 of the 99' WCF. My Spurs would go on to win their first championship in franchise history... ahh the memories.

In person: "The Catch 2" (Steve Young & Terrell Owens to win the 98-99 wildcard over the Packers)

Not in person (though I was in SF, watching at the Civic Center with everyone else): SF Giants 2010 WS win.

"There's nothing you can do if you're too scared to try." - Nickel Creek

Patriots are down 28-3 against the Falcons. Touchdown. Stripsack. Touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Edelman's catch which led to a touchdown and 2-point conversion. Superbowl in overtime for the first time ever. Touchdown. Goodell hands Kraft the trophy then scurries off. Brady is the goat.
