feeling pretty terrible
So I heard back today and didn't get a FT offer at middle market bank....feels weird because I busted my ass this summer.
My boss and I were on great terms...i went out with my associate a few times and we became pretty good friends. I literally busted my ass everyday. We had 2 performance reviews...the first one I was told I was doing a fantastic job and that I just needed to improve my excel skills , and the 2nd one i was told i was doing great and that i showed initiative in getting better at excel.
Honestly I feel betrayed because i became pretty good friends with the guys i worked.
Fuck man. just caught me off guard.
I dont really know what im even here writing this..venting i guess. have a good weekend.
...? Have u been following the market? Not your fault
Why don't you speak with some of the guys you made a good connection with who will go to bat for you, grab some of their friends in the field, and find a spot somewhere else? Obviously easier said than done but the fact that you made good connections is worth a lot imo
You'll bounce back. If possible, take advantage of those great connections and friends you've made (like _________ said).
Ouch, I know that feeling. You put forth every effort you can and then you don't achieve the result you feel you deserve.
Did you get any feedback? At the very least they should tell you exactly why they didn't extend an offer.
Keep your head up. At least you have solid exp to put on the resume. This also may be a blessing in disguise if you get a FT offer at a better IB.
Don't be afraid to email and ask where they felt you were lacking. The personal relationship will hopefully foster a genuine response. At the very least, it sounds like they will be a great reference.
If genuinely busted ass and kept a good attitude the entire time, you should focus on the idea that it is not your fault. Could be the market. Could be some weird fit dynamic. Could be people higher up the chain making the call. Could be a fucking fluke.
There's a lot of luck in getting a career started even if you try hard and are well qualified. Over time, success has very little to do with luck and is mostly about process and attitude, but in the short run anything is possible.
Contact them and see if they will go to bat for you, as others have said. Good luck.
This sucks. I have heard of this happening so many times at my firm because of dumb HR bullshit. Go get drunk this weekend. After that, take some of the advice from above and you will be fine.
My thoughts (which probably won't help right now... look again in a few days):
Everything happens for a reason.
...and....
"The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty." (Churchill knows and you even if you don't agree with the first one, Churchill was smarter than us so you can't disagree).
This one can be hard to see... but look and you will find it. Keep your head up and the best thing you can do is try like hell not to lose momentum. Talk to the guys at your shop - ask, you have nothing to lose. If that doesn't work, parlay it into something else... if they like you, then they'll help you at a different place. Find the opportunity.
Do not give up.
And while we've all taken the ^ advice... days like this are when you're most likely to do something that'll get you arrested - so do so carefully... you don't want to make the path ahead of you even harder.
I end with Churchill: "If you're going through hell, keep going."
based on what you otter, you really are a good guy, so what I can advise you is that you should connect and reconnect more. that's how it is in the market.
