Finance, tech, and prestige

Despite the tech craze, elite finance still has more prestige than elite tech. For instance, even in tech heavy SF, elite finance firms (e.g., Silver Lake, KKR, Dodge and Cox, Farallon) are considered more prestigious than elite tech (e.g. Google, Facebook, Dropbox).

  1. Unless you're a founder, elite finance still has bigger upside than tech.
  2. Elite finance is tougher to get into. If you want to work at a top tech firm, you just major in CS in college and practice coding problems, so you ace the interviews. It is also less pedigree driven, as they care more about your coding skills than where you went to school. Getting into elite finance, however, is like pro sports: you have to start super early, excel in every aspect, make no errors, and be virtually perfect.
