Financial Systems Manager
Anyone here have any experience in Financial Systems Management or Analysis? I've always wondered what it's like to be in this sort of job.
Do you like it?
Do you wish you had more access to analysis and using the numbers within your systems?
Is the job rewarding?
Do you feel like you are productive and happy in the job?
Do you need a lot of programming experience?
I'm in FP&A and enjoy it, but have always had a very in depth experience in systems implementation. I've considered making the jump into it, but haven't because I worry that I'd be bored.
I really enjoy working with spreadsheets and systems, but I have no real programming experience outside of some basic VBA. I do really like to solve problems and like the feeling of "producing something" at work.

From what I know, not much programming is needed. I much prefer FP&A to Fin Systems, its a really secluded job. Most of your interactions is over the phone & hours worth of conference calls. There is lots of testing. When you finally get your problem fixed you don't feel like you produced anything besides a headache and a need to drink heavily.
Personally it is not for me.
This is exactly how I picture it.
The only real reason I was interested is that maybe it would give you more of a feeling of accomplishment. In FP&A it often feels like you are just running the cycle of Budget, Forecast, Actuals over and over again without ever really getting anywhere. I don't mind it terribly, but really would like the feeling of "completing" something.
On the other hand, I assume there is probably a lot of this in Fin Systems too. Once things are implemented, you're just there to manage.
The other thought I had about Fin Systems is that it may be a good way to specialize and create job security. You'd be an expert in this, which may be hard to find for companies.

There is a lot of demand for experts in fin sys. & yes good job security.
It is a great position for some people, just be sure what the environment is like before you make the jump.
Side note, the people in that department are usually older &/or foreign.
