So, I just finished reading the economist for the first time and I'm kind of baffled. Ok, so some of the stories I'm familiar with but others, I have no clue about. Is that normal?? What should I do? I want to give finance/econ a chance but I dont know what to do.

It's a trade journal. It would be unrealistic for you to understand everything that was discussed if you aren't currently in finance or business or haven't been reading or following business news for a little while.
Keep reading it, along with countless other financial news sources. It will come together.

Read read read and read. The more you read the more you will understand. I usually read the economists and the WSJ on a daily basis
Keep reading it and use google/wikipedia for things you don't understand.

I'll do you better> I am assuming you are a student. You can get 51 issues plus all the other stuff they send you (special reports, online access etc) for $77 bucks. Just sign up with a .edu email. No reason not to plunk down once a week and read that.
if you're crunched for time, I like to just stick with the WSJ. maybe scan headlines a few other places to find a few more articles particularly important and/or relevant to what you're pursuing, but that's it.
