Fitness on the job
Hi,
Was just wondering how difficult it is to maintain overall physical fitness whilst on the job at MBB. Have any of you been able to lose a significant amount of weight / gain some muscle mass? Or is this far too difficult given the travelling / hours / stress etc
Cheers
Class pass with a budget gym back home is your friend here.
It really depends on the project and also your team.
Some cases, you'll be out by 7pm on most days, which gives you time for dinner, exercise, etc.
The opposite is also true. I have a friend there who is on a medium length project that is 8am - 10:30pm or so every single day. And it's intense so there isn't a room for a 1.5 hour break in the middle of the day to work out.
It ebbs and flows. I got this advice from someone who used to be in PE, but I think it applies to consulting as well - when it comes to personal things like working out, your BEST bet is to just get your day started early and get it in before you start. People aren't going to bother you at 6am. But it's for some reason embedded in the work culture where bothering you with work at 8 and 9pm is normal.
100% agree on the morning thing. I also work out in the morning and I never get bothered. Probably missed 2 or 3 workouts due to work so far in 2019. I also clear easy emails 15-20 minutes pre gym (ie; see if any shit is coming through) which optically looks really good.
Thank you all for the comments! Do you find the hotel gym to be sufficient to get a good workout in?
I found that morning runs were the best way to stay in shape as they could be done almost anywhere. Hotel gyms can be hit or miss so I focused on body weight exercises (i.e. push-ups, burpees) and stair workouts when they were not available.
You cannot forget diet in the equation as well. It can take more effort to get healthy options but I found it was worth it in the end. Sometimes I would go to a grocery store and pick up fruit, yogurt and some healthy snacks for the day.
I'm currently awful at keeping in shape on the job, so am presently on a low-carb diet. Admittedly, I never tried any other diets, but - in terms of dramatic weight loss - I've found the results to be very pleasing indeed. That said, it's probably not the "healthiest" way of shifting heft.
When I worked in Geneva (and enjoyed two hour lunch breaks), I used to spend c. 90mins in the gym almost every day. Realise, of course, that this isn't feasible for most finance pros.
You only have so many hours in the day, and if you spend a decent amount working/commuting, that might not leave too much time for your fitness goals.
However, that doesn't mean you have to let everything go to hell. Make sure to maintain your diet, and be smart about what you eat. Avoid the sneaky stuff; I just saw at Chipotle queso (I know not great) and chips is ~1200 calories. Do the big gym workouts when you can, but also doing smaller workouts when you have time can be helpful. Doing pushups/squats as mentioned above are great, and can be done at home. Make sure to go for reps and proper form, maybe try to work up to 500 bodyweight squats.
