Fixed Income Research vs Jr. Fixed Income Portfolio Manager
In the final running for 2 diff roles- I want to take company/location out of the picture. I am having hard time making a decision because the pros for one role do not necessarily translate into a con for the other role
Which one would give me better exit opps or is better in the long term? I am thinking maybe the FIR role because I can lateral over into distressed HF/PE but not quite sure if that is the case or not.
Both roles are at large Asset Managers.
Role 1- Financials Fixed Income Research Analyst- focus on banks/asset backed securities/insurance firms (Firm manages approx $400B in Fixed Income Strategies)
Role 2- Jr. Fixed Income Portfolio Manager (Firm manages approx $200B in Fixed Income Strategies)
Any advice/wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
I don't have an answer for you, but I was wondering if you could share your background. Like how long you've been working for and for what role. Was hoping to get insight into a career path in fixed income.
Yeah I'd actually really like to hear about your background as well
First- its almost impossible to discuss exit ops with the info you provided. The title and AUM alone doesnt tell the story. I mean , 'Jr. Fixed Income PM' could literally mean a dozen different roles. Are you doing any discretionary trading? Are you actually managing a against a benchmark? Or are you simply managing allocations?
Second- I wouldnt say that FIR sets you up any 'better' for a distressed HF, and especially not a PE. In my experience, those in FIR stay in similar FIR roles or move to something more Macro (which distressed is not). Just think about it- not only are there limited distressed Fin/Insur plays in the market, the skillset you gain in FIR is too nuanced to be applicable to other the more distressed industries.
@BillyRay05 I should have been more clear in my post, I apologize- I will be performing model analysis, portfolio decision making, trade prep, trading, reporting, attribution reporting, monitoring portfolio performance and exposures. I will be managing against IG benchmark for the Jr. FI PM role
For the FIR role I will also be analyzing asset backed securities as well.
