Fixed Income Strategy Role
I'm working in this role FT starting later this year out of undergrad at a large AM only (Fidelity/BlackRock/Vanguard/SSGA). I know what to expect more or less but what are the exit opps? Would it be better to continue in this role and work up the PMG ladder or to go into S&T? My long term goal is to go to an M7 and maybe break into PE but idk if this is possible.
Also I'm posting this here because the AM forum is literally dead
Take a look at this thread https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/blackrock-pmg-etc-exit-opps-hf-p…

Is anyone here familiar with the exit opportunities and typical progression of analysts in fixed income strategy? It seems like there's very little turnover in general, mainly because most people get there mid-career and stay.
It depends... I know some people who went on to the buyside. Others have laterally gone to sales/trading within the same bank.
What would you say it depends on? Is there a stronger value proposition to one group or the other depending on your specific function?
almost every fixed income strategist that started the same time as i did at my first BB firm are now either rates swap traders, or hedge fund managers. it is a great career path...if you can find the right group to join. strategy is a place to learn the business without the pressure to put up P&L every day
So are FI strategists similar to desk analysts? Are FI strategists typically quant positions or do fundamental strats also exist?
At my bank people tend to have quantitative backgrounds, but it's not exactly a quant-only role. You have to be better at math than most people, but you're not writing algos. A lot of it ties in with global macro.
Assume you're talking about interest rate strategy, in which case it is a great place to start and learn. If you have the temperament or desire for trading, you can make the switch (or at least tons of people have in the past). Know at least 4 personally, 2 went to sell-side rates trading and 2 to buyside.
