Florida Engineering major seeking advice for B School

I am an engineering major in Florida planning to eventually get an MBA at a top school. Everyone keeps telling me that without work experience at GS or a similar place, I won't get in. This just does not make sense to me that an entire MBA class would be investment bankers. If I work in Florida at a place like Raytheon or Harris, get a few minor promotions or so in the 3-4 years of work experience time, could I reasonably get in?

Now I know engineers can get into banking, but, especially from Florida, it would be a challenge. What would be the best kind of job to shoot for with an engineering major in order to have good experience for an MBA?

Thanks.

As long as you have 3-4 years of WE and promotions, you can get into any program. In the boom years, having IBD or PE was a golden ticket for admissions, but look at the top PE firms recruitment stats this year, bschools are lessening their PE exposure. Not having IBD WE will hurt you if you want to do PE after the MBA.

Good thing at the moment I don't have an exact career goal, mostly that I will want an MBA and that I will want to something with it (but obviously in the MBA admissions essay I need to be precise). Thanks, this is good news for me as I ready myself early for the GMAT.

First thing you should do, stop listening to your dumb ass friends.

The second thing would be to learn how to create a forum topic with a pertinent title.

How about "Importance of Work Experience" instead of "Everyone keeps telling me"?

Thanks. I hate to be a jerk, but you know. I am one.

I don't know what you mean by "top school", but assuming mine counts, I can tell you first-hand that work experience runs the gamut. As expected, a good part of my class is made up of former bankers, consultants and traders; but there are also huge numbers of people with completely non-traditional backgrounds that span pretty much every industry.

With that said, I'd probably lump engineering, military, and "other accounting/financial services" as this tier of pretty traditional pre-MBA work experiences that will not seem out of place at any top program, as long as you can demonstrate career growth, a track record of success, and a clear vision of how the MBA will help you.

Hello, just a quick question. If I wanted to transfer to Cornell's AEM program, would being an engineering major hurt me? Or if I meet the pre-reqs can I be competitive?

Thanks.
